Responsibilities:

• Planning & Scheduling
• Develop and maintain the backfill schedule aligned with the mine plan, production forecasts, and stope sequencing.
• Integrate backfill requirements into the short-, medium-, and long-term mine plans.
• Ensure fill recipe designs (cement content, solids concentration, binder type) meet geotechnical and operational requirements.
• Operations Management
• Oversee daily backfill operations, ensuring safe and efficient paste plant performance and underground delivery.
• Coordinate with paste plant operators, mining crews, and geotechnical engineers to minimize delays in the stope cycle.
• Monitor key performance indicators (throughput, binder usage, fill quality, cycle time) and implement improvements.
• Technical Oversight
• Approve fill stope barricade designs in consultation with geotechnical engineers.
• Maintain QA/QC programs for paste fill strength, flow characteristics, and curing performance.
• Investigate and troubleshoot operational or quality issues with paste/backfill delivery.
• Safety, Environment & Compliance
• Contribute to our J20-Journey to Zero safety culture while adhering to all health and safety standards, policies, procedures, and legislation.
• Promote a strong safety culture across the backfill team.
• Ensure compliance with mine safety regulations, environmental permits, and paste plant operating standards.
• Lead incident investigations related to backfill and paste operations.
• Leadership & People Management
• Manage and mentor a multidisciplinary team of engineers, supervisors, and operators.
• Facilitate training and competency development for backfill plant and underground paste crews.
• Conduct regular performance reviews and team meetings.
• Continuous Improvement
• Lead cost reduction initiatives through binder optimization, improved cycle efficiency, and preventative maintenance.
• Implement technology upgrades and automation to enhance backfill system performance.
• Liaise with suppliers and technical experts to improve product and process reliability.
• Work within ISO 14001 and 45001 standards.

Qualification Requirements:

• Degree in Mining Engineering, Civil Engineering, Metallurgy, or related discipline.
• Minimum 3 years in a backfill/paste-related leadership role.
• Strong knowledge of paste/hydraulic fill plant operations, cementitious binder chemistry, and stope fill design.
• Proficiency in mine planning software (e.g., Deswik, Vulcan, Datamine) and Microsoft Office Suite.
• Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
