Lead Technical Engineer

To design, develop and improve software, utilising various engineering methodologies, that provides business, platform, and technology capabilities for our customers and colleagues.

Development and delivery of high-quality software solutions by using industry aligned programming languages, frameworks, and tools. Ensuring that code is scalable, maintainable, and optimized for performance.

Cross-functional collaboration with product managers, designers, and other engineers to define software requirements, devise solution strategies, and ensure seamless integration and alignment with business objectives.

Collaboration with peers, participate in code reviews, and promote a culture of code quality and knowledge sharing.

Stay informed of industry technology trends and innovations and actively contribute to the organization's technology communities to foster a culture of technical excellence and growth.

Adherence to secure coding practices to mitigate vulnerabilities, protect sensitive data, and ensure secure software solutions.

Implementation of effective unit testing practices to ensure proper code design, readability, and reliability.

To contribute or set strategy, drive requirements and make recommendations for change. Plan resources, budgets, and policies; manage and maintain policies/ processes; deliver continuous improvements and escalate breaches of policies/procedures.

If managing a team, they define jobs and responsibilities, planning for the department's future needs and operations, counselling employees on performance and contributing to employee pay decisions/changes. They may also lead a number of specialists to influence the operations of a department, in alignment with strategic as well as tactical priorities, while balancing short and long term goals and ensuring that budgets and schedules meet corporate requirements.

OR for an individual contributor, they will be a subject matter expert within own discipline and will guide technical direction. They will lead collaborative, multi-year assignments and guide team members through structured assignments, identify the need for the inclusion of other areas of specialisation to complete assignments. Advise key stakeholders, including functional leadership teams and senior management on functional and cross functional areas of impact and alignment.

As a Lead Technical Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in driving technical excellence, platform stability, and modern engineering practices across critical Corporate & Payments technology platforms. The Lead Technical Engineer is accountable for the end‑to‑end technical delivery, stability, and evolution of complex technology services and platforms. The role combines deep technical expertise, engineering leadership, and operational excellence, ensuring systems meet high standards of availability, performance, security, and regulatory compliance. The role operates as a senior individual contributor and technical leader, influencing across multiple teams without direct line management.

To be successful in this role, you should have experience with:

  • Provide technical leadership across design, development, deployment, and support of complex enterprise systems.
  • Own and drive architecture and design decisions, ensuring alignment with Barclays engineering standards, security policies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Lead incident management and problem resolution, including hands‑on participation in major incidents, root cause analysis, and permanent fix implementation.
  • Partner with SRE, engineering, infrastructure, and operations teams to improve system resilience, scalability, and observability.
  • Drive automation, reliability engineering, and reduction of manual operational effort.
  • Influence and embed Agile and DevOps practices across delivery teams.
  • Review and challenge technical solutions to ensure quality, maintainability, and cost efficiency.
  • Proactively identify technical debt, operational risks, and control gaps, driving remediation plans.
  • Act as a technical escalation point for complex issues and cross‑platform dependencies.
  • Mentor and coach engineers, raising overall engineering capability and promoting a culture of continuous learning.
  • Collaborate with vendors and third‑party partners to ensure delivery against agreed outcomes and standards.
  • Drive Barclays AI agenda by adopting tools and implementing it in the day-to-day activities.

  • Strong hands‑on experience in enterprise application development and/or platform engineering.
  • Expertise in Java / distributed systems / middleware / databases / messaging platforms (technology stack aligned to Corporate Banking platforms).
  • Experience with cloud and hybrid architecture, CI/CD pipelines, and automation tooling.
  • Proven capability in production support, incident management, and system reliability engineering.
  • Solid understanding of non‑functional requirements (performance, resilience, security, scalability).
  • Experience in banking or financial services technology environments.
  • Exposure to SRE practices, observability tooling, and automation frameworks.
  • Experience working in regulated environments with strong governance expectations.
  • Contribute to cross‑functional initiatives aimed at improving platform stability, performance, and customer experience.
