Job Summary

UT Southwestern is in search of a skilled and experienced Power Plant Operator I for the Thermal Energy Plant team. This position works under close supervision to perform semi-skilled level operation and maintenance of equipment and machinery in a central plant environment.

The ideal candidate has 2+ years of experience working as a Power Plant Operator in a thermal energy plant, specifically in:

  • Boiler operations
  • Steam systems
  • Chiller operations
  • HVAC and refrigeration
  • Cooling tower and pump operations
  • Water treatment
  • Building automation systems

Preferred qualifications include completion of a certified operator program and/or a power plant technology degree. Experience in electrical, plumbing, controls, and welding is also desirable.

  • Work Location: Plant Operations, Dallas Campus
  • Shift Requirements: Flexibility to work nights, days, weekends, and holidays. Power Plant Operators may be on-call during emergencies, inclement weather, or to cover other shifts.

Experience and Education

Required:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience: 2 years of semi-skilled level experience in the operation and maintenance of mechanical, electrical, or industrial equipment
    • Additional related education may be considered in lieu of experience (each year completed from a related plant operator higher education training program may substitute for one year of required experience, including vocational or trade school)

Preferred:

  • Completion of a certified operator program
  • Experience in a university physical plant environment

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Completion of a certified operator program (upon hire)

Job Duties

  • Start up, shut down, and adjust power plant and/or chilling station equipment or systems in accordance with operational and safety procedures
  • Monitor equipment and maintain records of operational status
  • Clean and maintain equipment and work areas
  • Operate control computer systems
  • Perform detailed inspections of operating equipment
  • Report unusual conditions, problems, or deficiencies to appropriate personnel
  • Identify and report safety hazards and equipment malfunctions
  • Attend meetings and training courses
  • Train new personnel as required
  • Perform preventive or corrective maintenance tasks incidental to mechanical or electrical system operations
  • Complete work orders using automated maintenance program systems
  • Perform other duties as assigned
