Transmission Line Design – Engineer/Designer
This posting is to fill multiple Engineer and/or Designer positions within the Southern Company Services Technical Shared Services (TSS) Transmission Line Design Organization. Available Positions: Forest Park, GA.
Work Location, Schedule, & Travel:
- Positions will be based out of Forest Park, GA (Metro Atlanta), however candidates living outside of the area may be considered with the expectation that they could successfully telework and be willing to travel to work and/or field location on a routine (to be determined) and as-needed basis.
- Hybrid work schedule (both in-office and telecommute); currently four (4) days in-office and one (1) day telecommute.
- Relocation assistance may be provided if the successful candidate does not currently live within a reasonable commute distance.
- This position will require some travel (approximately 25%) and the ability to work successfully in a remote/virtual environment with access to internet service.

Line Design Engineer/Designer (Production)
The successful Transmission Line Designer/Engineer (Production) candidate will support estimate preparation, develop design options, and prepare construction specifications. These design packages will be used to construct new and update existing transmission lines enhancing the Southern Company grid. These enhancements could include serving new customers (data centers, manufacturers, battery plants, etc.). In addition, design of transmission lines could include connecting renewable generation plants to the system.
Line Contract Engineer
The successful Transmission Line Contract Engineer candidates will provide guidance, oversight, and quality assurance reviews for Southern Company-approved contractors as they develop design solutions, cost estimates, and prepare construction packages for outsourced line design jobs. These positions may be filled at a grade level commensurate with the successful candidate's experience.
Line Design Engineer/Designer (Project Support)
This Line Scoping Engineer/Estimator position will be responsible for applying Southern Company's engineering processes, design criteria, and software applications in the design and construction of high-voltage transmission lines (HVTL). The successful candidates, under direct supervision, will follow prescribed procedures to support estimate preparation, develop design options, and prepare construction specifications. These positions may be filled at a grade level commensurate with the successful candidate's experience.
Line Standards Engineer
This Transmission Line Standards Engineer position will provide technical leadership for Transmission Line Design, Maintenance, and Construction, on products used in the construction of transmission lines. They will assist with the development of standard design criteria and processes for Southern Company.
Job Responsibilities (All Positions):
- Become knowledgeable of the transmission line design practices and work processes.
- Support the development of design standards and criteria for use on the Southern Company transmission system.
- Support project origination, project management, construction and maintenance teams during day-to-day operations as well as in emergency restoration of failed equipment.
Primary Responsibilities for each position are as follows:
Line Design Engineer/Designer (Production)
- Design high voltage transmission lines using PLS-CADD.
- Estimate and order material for transmission projects.
- Support Transmission Line Construction.
Line Contract Engineer
- Provide guidance, oversight, and technical assistance/expertise on design/standards/tools to external engineering firms.
- Provide Quality Assurance reviews on PLS-CADD line model and job construction package and assist in material ordering.
- Provide evaluations / feedback on engineering firms' performance.
- Support Transmission Line Construction.
Line Design Engineer/Designer (Project Support)
- Scope Transmission Line Projects.
- Develop Conceptual Design Options.
- Design high voltage transmission lines using PLS-CADD.
- Prepare Cost Estimate.
Line Standards Engineer
- Develop Southern Company standard designs for transmission line assigned product(s).
- Perform construction inspections of transmission assets on an as needed basis.
- Serve as a technical resource to design, operations, and maintenance groups to provide design consistency and problem resolution.
- Provide technical guidance for complex projects, assessing the impact of existing and future projects on the system, and take steps necessary to minimize any adverse impacts.
- Serve on Southern Company and Industry committees/task forces, providing leadership and guidance to ensure that the best designs and practices are developed for Southern Company.
Job Qualifications (All Positions):
- Education: BS degree or higher in Engineering (Civil, Electrical or Mechanical preferred), a two-year degree or higher from a technical school or university with 2+ years of experience with Transmission Line Design, 5+ years of experience as a designer with no degree, or a Professional Engineer (PE) license is a plus.
- Experience: Previous Transmission Line Design experience is preferred, maintenance, construction, or project management experience in the utility industry.
- Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Knowledge of overall transmission line design, construction, and maintenance practices, with specific expertise in line design and construction materials preferred. Technical aptitude to solve civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering problems related to HVTL design and construction. Technical ability to read, interpret, and apply design criteria and government regulations to HVTL design and construction. Knowledge of the National Electric Safety Code preferred. Computer skills to be proficient with standard office software applications and to adapt quickly to HVTL application software. Interpersonal skills sufficient to build working relationships with peers, internal customers, and the public. Time management skills sufficient to manage multiple projects with various priorities and competing deadlines. Written and verbal communication skills sufficient to satisfactorily complete project documentation and to function effectively in a team environment.
