Lead Data Engineer

Assurant is seeking a Lead Data Engineer with strong expertise in Databricks, Azure, and Business Intelligence to design, build, and lead enterprise-scale data solutions. The role requires a proven ability to architect and deliver scalable BI platforms, mentor development teams, and collaborate with stakeholders in both technical and business domains. Experience with reinsurance processes (earnings setup, actuarial changes, underwriting adjustments, and client launches) is highly desirable.

Duties and Responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities in this job include:

  • Architecture & Strategy

    • Co-architect enterprise BI and data solutions on the Databricks Lakehouse, leveraging Delta Lake, Unity Catalog, and MLflow.

    • Apply Kimball dimensional modeling (or equivalent) to support reporting, actuarial analysis, and financial reconciliations.

    • Define and enforce best practices, standards, and governance for BI, data engineering, and analytics.

  • Leadership & Collaboration

    • Act as the technical lead for BI development teams; provide direction, code reviews, and mentorship in Databricks (PySpark, SQL, Delta Live Tables).

    • Partner with business teams (Finance, Actuarial, Underwriting, Reinsurance Operations) to translate client requirements into robust BI solutions.

    • Lead reinsurance-specific enhancements, including earnings setup, premium/fee/tax adjustments, and regulatory reporting.

  • Development & Delivery

    • Build and optimize ETL/ELT pipelines using Databricks Workflows, Delta Live Tables, and APIs (replacing legacy SSIS).

    • Deliver BI reporting through Power BI connected to Databricks SQL warehouses (replacing SSRS).

    • Support new client onboarding by leading data mapping, validation, and setup for obligor, AD, earnings, and reinsurance structures.

    • Automate operational activities through CI/CD (Azure DevOps/GitHub Actions) and Databricks Jobs.

  • Operational Excellence

    • Diagnose and resolve performance/capacity issues across data pipelines, SQL warehouses, and BI reporting.

    • Ensure compliance with corporate governance, security policies, and reinsurance industry standards.

Requirements

The requirements needed for this position include:

  • 10+ years of software development experience.

  • 5+ years of strong hands-on experience in Databricks, Azure Data Lake, PySpark, Delta Lake, and Power BI integration.

  • 5+ years of experience in business intelligence and data warehousing methodologies (Kimball preferred).

  • 2+ years of proven track record in a leadership role – mentoring developers, guiding technical strategy, and driving delivery in complex environments.

  • 3+ years of experience guiding offshore resources.

  • Solid understanding of reinsurance operations: earnings processing, actuarial adjustments, underwriting changes, and client launches.

  • Experience in financial services or insurance industry.

Pay Range: $101,500.00 - $169,400.00 Any posted pay range considers a wide range of compensation factors, including candidate background, experience and work location, while also allowing for salary growth within the position.
