As a Snow Operations - Temporary Equipment Operator, you'll be on the front lines of winter weather response—operating snow plows, cinder trucks, dump trucks, loaders, or motor graders to clear snow and ice from city streets and/or airport runways, ramps, and taxiways. Under general supervision, the Snow Operations - Temporary Equipment Operator is responsible for operating a variety of specialized heavy-duty equipment for the removal of snow and ice from public roadways and/or airport runways. This critical seasonal position directly supports public safety by ensuring the safety and accessibility of the City of Flagstaff's transportation network during adverse weather. The successful candidate must be able to be contacted and respond promptly, in addition to being willing and able to work emergency shifts on holidays, weekends, evenings, or 12-hour shifts as needed. This role requires skilled equipment operation under challenging weather conditions and contributes to the community's ability to maintain essential services. Examples of the Work Performed Essential Functions Note: The following list of essential functions is not intended to be all-inclusive. Incumbents are expected to perform other duties as assigned by supervisors to meet operational needs and departmental objectives. Operates a range of equipment, including snowplows, 10-wheel dump trucks with plow attachments, 6-wheel cinder spreaders, front-end loaders, motor graders, specialized runway plows, and other related vehicles and maintenance equipment to clear snow and ice from designated routes in a safe, responsible, and efficient manner. Follows all safety regulations and operating procedures to ensure personal safety and the safety of the public. Performs snow and ice removal duties, and may apply cinders and/or de-icing materials to roadways, on a scheduled or emergency basis, including early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays. Conducts pre-shift and routine inspections, and basic maintenance on assigned equipment, including fueling, cleaning, and minor adjustments to ensure proper functioning and safety, and operational readiness. Monitors weather reports and road conditions, reports hazards, and adjusts snow removal operations accordingly. Loads and unloads salt, cinders, or other materials for road treatment. Completes daily work logs, equipment checklists, and incident reports as needed. Reports any obstacles or damage caused during operations. Works cooperatively with other Public Works crews and follows direction from Shift Supervisors or senior staff. Wears appropriate personal protective equipment at all times.
