Stantec Geotechnical Engineer

At Stantec, we help deliver the critical minerals needed to power our world, from the cars we drive to the infrastructure powering our communities. And we don't just design the largest, deepest, and most technically challenging mines in the world-we do it sustainably. We're helping clients reduce energy usage, adopt clean energy sources, and implement digital solutions and automation.

Join our team of mining professionals and you'll be at the forefront of this evolving industry while building the mine of the future. You'll also build your own future, with exciting opportunities for development and advancement.

Your Opportunity

At Stantec, our geotechnical engineers are contributing to the future of responsible resource development-supporting the delivery of critical minerals while advancing safe, sustainable, and well-governed engineering solutions. We are seeking an Intermediate-Level Civil or Geotechnical Engineer to join our U.S. Energy and Resources Geotechnical Team and support a diverse portfolio of technically challenging projects.

In this role, you will be involved across the full mining lifecycle, from early-stage concepts through detailed design, construction support, operations, and closure. Your primary focus will be on tailings storage facilities, heap leach facilities, and waste rock management systems, with opportunities to work on complex design and operational challenges under the guidance of experienced technical leaders. Beyond mining, you will also contribute to projects involving water dams, pumped storage, and hydropower facilities, offering exposure to a broad range of geotechnical applications.

You will join a highly collaborative national team of approximately 100 geotechnical engineers, working alongside recognized industry experts and subject matter specialists. This position is well-suited for an engineer who enjoys hands-on technical work while steadily expanding their leadership responsibilities. You will support and, over time, lead geotechnical investigations and material characterization programs; perform and review engineering calculations and numerical analyses; and contribute to the development of detailed designs and technical deliverables.

As your experience grows, you will have opportunities to serve as Deputy Engineer of Record (DEoR) for active or inactive tailings facilities, with a clearly defined pathway toward future Engineer of Record (EoR) responsibilities. You will interact directly with clients, regulators, and internal technical specialists, gaining exposure to project governance, independent review processes, and best-practice dam safety stewardship.

Stantec places strong emphasis on professional development. You will receive mentorship from senior technical leaders, opportunities to contribute to conference papers and presentations, and support to build both technical depth and professional confidence. The ideal candidate brings strong communication skills, attention to detail, and a solid foundation in geotechnical engineering across planning, design, and construction phases. Domestic and international travel may be required for site inspections and field support activities.

Your Key Responsibilities

- Contribute to a collaborative and technically rigorous team environment, supporting innovative and defensible geotechnical solutions across mining and dam-related projects.

- Support and progressively take on project leadership responsibilities, contributing to the delivery of geotechnical work from investigation and analysis through detailed design, ensuring work quality, schedule adherence, and budget awareness.

- Develop, oversee, and review geotechnical field and laboratory investigation programs, with a primary focus on tailings and mine waste materials, under the guidance of senior technical staff.

- Perform and review geotechnical analyses and numerical modeling using industry-standard tools such as GeoStudio, Rocscience, PLAXIS, and FLAC, supporting evaluations of stability, deformation, and performance of tailings and water retention structures.

- Contribute to the development of detailed designs and high-quality technical deliverables, including engineering reports, memoranda, construction specifications, and design drawings, consistent with regulatory and industry best practice.

- Support technical engagements with Independent Tailings Review Boards (ITRBs) and external reviewers, including preparation of technical materials and participation in meetings alongside senior engineers.

- Assist with proposal development and business development activities, including scope definition, technical input, and collaboration with project managers and marketing teams.

- Participate in client interactions and relationship-building, gaining experience in project delivery discussions, technical reviews, and client support.

- Serve as Deputy Engineer of Record (DEoR) for active or inactive tailings storage facilities, with a willingness and demonstrated progression toward future Engineer of Record (EoR) responsibilities.

- Mentor and support junior staff, contributing to knowledge sharing, technical development, and team growth, under the guidance of senior project leaders.

- Promote and adhere to safe work practices, following company, client, and regulatory requirements when planning and executing office and field-based work.

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

- Strong technical writing, organizational, and oral communication skills, with attention to detail and the ability to clearly document engineering analyses and design decisions.

- Solid experience supporting the design and analysis of water dams and/or mine waste and tailings facilities, including exposure to operational and closure considerations.

- Demonstrated experience performing and interpreting seepage, slope stability, and deformation analyses, using industry-standard software such as GeoStudio, Rocscience, PLAXIS, and/or FLAC.

- Working knowledge of material balance and tailings deposition modeling, with experience using tools such as Muk3D considered an asset.

- Ability to work independently under general supervision, applying sound engineering judgment in both office and field settings, including remote project sites.

- Experience collaborating within multidisciplinary teams, with the capability to support and mentor junior staff as part of project delivery and team development.

Education and Experience

- Minimum of a B.S. in Civil Engineering with preference given to advanced degrees.

- 7+ years of experience working on civil and/or geotechnical engineering projects, focusing on design, site investigation, reporting and business development on water dams and/or tailings and mine waste projects.

- Existing professional registration (P.E.) or ability to obtain within 3-6 months of starting work.
