Senior Software Engineer - Engineering Tools And Computing
Archer is an aerospace company based in San Jose, California building an all-electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft with a mission to advance the benefits of sustainable air mobility. As a Senior Software Engineer - Engineering Tools And Computing, you will be a key contributor to the internal software used by engineers across the company to design and analyze eVTOL aircraft.
We're looking for a candidate equally comfortable in the worlds of aerospace and software engineering. Perhaps an aerospace engineer with strong interest and demonstrated skill in software engineering, or a software engineer with a past life in aerospace.
What you'll do:
- Develop and maintain the internal software libraries and applications that engineers use to design and analyze eVTOL aircraft.
- Work closely with design engineers to understand the blockers in their workflows. Design/write/maintain the software tools they need to work faster or more efficiently.
- Improve developer infrastructure, tooling, and practices.
- Promote a culture of software excellence across the engineering organization.
What you need:
- 5+ years of experience in a related field.
- B.S., M.S, or Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computational Engineering, or related field.
- Advanced, recent knowledge of scientific software development in Python.
- Exceptional debugging skills.
- Familiarity with standard practices in software development, including version control, CI/CD, software testing, environment management.
- Experience as an engineer in one or more of the following areas of aircraft design - aerodynamics, conceptual design, rotor/propeller design, vehicle simulation, loads and dynamics, structural design, stress analysis, GNC.
- Ability to understand and anticipate the needs of design engineers, and to design/implement software to make their lives easier.
- Experience with at least one CI/CD framework.
- Experience in a fast-paced design environment.
- Knowledge of Linux.
Bonus qualifications:
- Contributions to open source scientific software projects.
- Matlab experience.
- Proficiency in a compiled language (C/C++, Fortran, Rust).
- Experience as a user or administrator of HPC systems (SLURM/PBS, parallel file systems, etc.).
- A passion for aviation.
- Experience with any of the following:
- Parallelism/concurrency patterns for scientific software in Python.
- Software packaging for Python (conda, wheels, conda-forge).
- Software packaging for HPC (e.g., Spack, EasyBuild).
- Software build systems (e.g., CMake, Meson, Bazel).
- Containerization (Docker, Singularity/Apptainer).
- Mathematical understanding of 3D geometry representation (NURBS).
- CAD kernels (e.g., ACIS, ParaSolid, OpenCASCADE).
- ML/AI tools and methods (scikit-learn, PyTorch, TensorFlow, ONNX).
- Writing database applications in Python.
- Web application development.
- AWS infrastructure and services (EC2, S3, ParallelCluster, database services, etc.)

Actual compensation offered will be determined by factors such as job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
