Senior Engineering Manager - Core Data Libraries

The Apple Data Platform team, part of the Services organization, powers analytics and machine learning across Apple. Our mission is to deliver cutting-edge, reliable, and user-friendly infrastructure for data ingestion, storage, processing, and interaction, enabling teams to build data-intensive applications with ease and success. This role sits within the Data Lakehouse team, a part of the Apple Data Platform. The team provides a fully managed Lakehouse solution powered by Apache Iceberg, Iceberg REST Catalog, and custom-built services to manage data at scale. Our platform supports both analytical and machine learning workloads across Apple, serving key products and organizations including Siri, Search, Media, iCloud, News, Apple Intelligence, and Maps. We continuously innovate to meet evolving customer needs and market trends. We seek engineers passionate about building world-class infrastructure products. In this role, you will lead the data lakehouse team, guiding team members in both technical and professional growth. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to lead the planning, execution, and success of technical projects, with a focus on enhancing the experience for Apple's internal customers.

Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership: Build, mentor, and manage a high-performing team of software engineers specializing in Spark, Iceberg, and related technologies; Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement; Provide technical guidance and mentorship to team members, promoting their professional growth; Conduct performance reviews, provide feedback, and identify opportunities for training and development; Manage team workload, prioritize projects, and ensure timely delivery of high-quality solutions.
  • Technical Strategy and Execution: Define and execute the technical roadmap for our data processing platform, aligning with Apple's overall data strategy; Drive innovation in data processing techniques, exploring new technologies and approaches to improve performance, scalability, and efficiency; Lead the design, development, and deployment of robust and scalable data pipelines using Spark and Iceberg; Ensure the reliability, availability, and security of our data processing infrastructure.; Collaborate with other engineering teams to integrate our data processing technologies with other Apple systems and services.
  • Stakeholder Management: Partner with data scientists, data engineers, product managers, and other stakeholders to understand their data processing needs and requirements; Communicate technical concepts and solutions effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences; Advocate for best practices in data processing and engineering; Manage expectations and ensure alignment across different teams.
  • Engineering Thought Leadership: Represent Apple data platform work at external conferences; Deliver presentations, and write blog posts highlighting Apple's leadership in big data processing.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 12+ years of software development experience, with a focus on data processing at scale.
  • 8+ years of engineering people management experience—leading, mentoring, and growing teams.
  • 3+ years of experience managing engineering managers.
  • Deep expertise in open source data platform technologies like Apache Spark and Apache Iceberg.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • BS, MS, or Ph.D. in Computer Science or a related field of study.

Pay & Benefits

At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $228,100 and $393,800, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location. Apple employees also have the opportunity to become an Apple shareholder through participation in Apple's discretionary employee stock programs. Apple employees are eligible for discretionary restricted stock unit awards, and can purchase Apple stock at a discount if voluntarily participating in Apple's Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
