Do you enjoy solving complex engineering challenges by writing software that interfaces directly with hardware systems? Are you passionate about test automation, data integrity, and smart control solutions at scale? At Apple, quality is built into everything we do. Our test engineers are essential to that mission, designing advanced test solutions that uphold the industry's highest standards. The Sensing Technology team develops breakthrough features like Face ID, Touch ID, and True Tone Display. We are looking for a software engineer with a deep understanding of instrumentation and algorithms, who can design robust software solutions to drive and optimize sensor test systems in mass production. This role is ideal for optical engineers who excel in precision metrology and are eager to broaden their expertise across advanced software frameworks, opto-mechanical systems, and high-speed instrumentation. It offers a clear path from specialist Optical Engineer to system-level Optical Test Solution Architect. You will lead seamless integration across Apple's optical design teams and global vendor ecosystems by building robust test architectures that enable scalable collaboration and consistent execution across worldwide manufacturing sites.
In this role, you will:
MS/PhD in Optical Engineering, Applied Optics, Physics with focus on precision metrology
3+ years of experience in optical test engineering, precision metrology, or photonic instrumentation
Proficiency in Python and C/C++ for optical hardware control and test automation
Strong knowledge of optical instrumentation (e.g., spectrometers, interferometers, power meters, beam profilers, detectors)
Experience implementing algorithms for calibration, spectral/photometric analysis, or optical signal processing
Proven ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver precision optical systems
Experience in optoelectronic device characterization or optical sensor validation (e.g., LEDs, VCSELs)
Familiarity with AI/ML techniques for data analysis or yield optimization
Background in optical system design and modeling (Zemax/CodeV or equivalent)
Knowledge of optical calibration standards (NIST traceability, CIE colorimetry, radiometry)
Exposure to instrumentation, control systems, signal processing, or machine learning is highly preferred
