Performance & Calibration Engineer

Apex Systems is looking to hire an ONSITE Performance & Calibration Engineer for our client based out of Hagerstown, MD.

This assignment is anticipated to be a 12-month contract with strong potential for extension; however, Apex Systems cannot guarantee the length of this assignment.

This will also have a first-shift Monday–Friday schedule.

Responsibilities:

• Lead performance and calibration development for complex embedded systems, focusing on powertrain, exhaust aftertreatment, driveline, and vehicle-level functions.
• Define and select feature-related hardware component specifications (e.g., turbocharging systems, camshaft profiles, and other performance-critical components).
• Calibrate embedded software datasets in accordance with defined technical prerequisites and system requirements.
• Own and drive calibration strategy and execution for assigned technical domains, serving as a recognized expert in the discipline.
• Contribute to verification planning and execution, ensuring calibrated solutions meet performance, quality, and regulatory expectations.
• Manage synchronization, configuration, and release of complete calibration datasets across development milestones.
• Provide technical leadership within cross-functional teams, influencing system design and integration decisions.
• Propose and implement improvements to calibration methods, tools, and workflows to enhance efficiency and robustness.
• Provide expert input into product, system, and technology roadmaps, aligning technical development with long-term strategy.
• Act as a mentor and coach to engineers within the organization, supporting technical growth and knowledge sharing.
• Network across engineering teams and sites to ensure alignment, best-practice adoption, and consistent delivery.
• Support development activities related to diagnostics, including on-board diagnostics (OBD) for advanced engine and emissions systems.

Experience:

• 8+ years of experience in performance engineering, calibration engineering, or embedded systems development.
• Recognized subject-matter expertise in calibration and performance optimization for complex mechanical and embedded systems.
• Extensive experience with embedded software calibration, dataset management, and system-level validation.
• Strong background working with powertrain, emissions, and diagnostics-focused systems, including OBD-related development.
• Proven experience leading technical initiatives, projects, or focus areas within engineering teams.
• Demonstrated ability to mentor, coach, and guide less-experienced engineers.
• Strong "T-shaped" technical profile, combining deep domain expertise with broader system-level understanding.
• Experience contributing to product strategies, roadmaps, or long-term technical planning.
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate technical value and influence decision-making across teams.
