Desktop Support Technician

The Desktop Support Technician provides hands-on technical support across a mixed Windows and macOS environment, with a strong emphasis on Windows 11. This role supports end users, scientific staff, and specialized equipment, ensuring reliable operation of desktop systems, collaboration tools, mobile devices, and hardware. The ideal candidate is a strong communicator who can troubleshoot a wide range of issues across Tier 1 and Tier 2 levels. This role will work mainly out of San Francisco (Mission Bay), with occasional travel to Redwood City.

Responsibilities

  • Provide Tier 1 and Tier 2 support for Windows 11 and macOS devices, with heavier focus on Windows.
  • Troubleshoot operating system issues, application errors, performance problems, and connectivity challenges.
  • Review and interpret system logs to support issue resolution (no programming required).
  • Support productivity tools, including advanced troubleshooting for Excel and other core applications.
  • Provide hands-on support for laptops, desktops, docking stations, monitors, printers, and peripherals.
  • Assist with mobile device setup and troubleshooting (iOS and Android), including email configuration and MDM enrollment.
  • Support conference room technology, including Zoom and Cisco-based hardware.
  • Assist scientific staff with equipment setup and basic troubleshooting (e.g., connecting lab instruments).
  • Handle account provisioning, password resets, and access-related issues.
  • Manage and document service requests and incidents in Jira, escalating when appropriate.
  • Deliver clear, professional communication to users at all technical levels.

Qualifications

Required
  • 4+ years of experience in desktop support or IT support roles (Tier 1 and Tier 2).
  • Strong expertise with Windows environments, especially Windows 11.
  • Experience supporting macOS in mixed environments.
  • Ability to interpret and troubleshoot system logs.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to support users of all technical backgrounds.
  • Experience with Zoom, conference room hardware, and collaboration tools.
  • Familiarity with Jira or similar ticketing systems.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred
  • CompTIA A+ or similar certification.
  • Experience in educational, research, or lab environments.
  • Exposure to supporting scientific or specialized equipment (no scientific background required).
  • Experience with mobile device management tools and mixed device fleets.
