About This Role
The Director of Engineering Operations is responsible for improving the efficiency, effectiveness, and predictability of the engineering organization. They design and run the operational systems, processes, metrics, and programs that enable engineering teams to deliver high-quality software at scale. This role partners closely with Engineering Leadership, Product, Program Management, and the CTO.
Key Responsibilities
- Define, implement, and continuously improve the engineering operating rhythm (e.g., quarterly planning, sprint cadence, metrics reviews, postmortems, on-call practices).
- Standardize processes across teams while supporting autonomy where appropriate.
- Own change management around new engineering processes and tools.
- Evaluate, deploy, and manage engineering-wide tools: CI/CD, source control workflows, observability platforms, incident management, developer experience tooling, etc.
- Partner with the Platform/DevOps teams to improve developer workflow speed and reliability.
- Drive initiatives to reduce toil, improve environment consistency, and measure productivity (e.g., DORA, SPACE metrics where appropriate).
- Establish frameworks for tracking delivery predictability, cross-team dependencies, and risk.
- Manage a small TPM organization (if exists), or run large cross-functional initiatives directly.
- Improve status reporting and provide executive visibility into engineering commitments and risks.
- Own engineering-wide KPIs: velocity, quality, incident frequency/response, cost efficiency, SLA adherence.
- Build dashboards and reporting systems to inform data-driven decision-making.
- Partner with Finance on forecasting, budget tracking, cloud cost management, and headcount planning.
- Support Eng leadership with org design, capacity planning, staffing models, and succession planning.
- Design and run onboarding for engineers and managers.
- Develop leadership programs, manager enablement, and culture-building initiatives.
- Partner with People/HR to design performance cycles and career frameworks for engineering.
- Work with SRE/QA to ensure incident response, testing frameworks, release processes, and reliability metrics are consistent and mature.
- Support audit/compliance efforts (SOC 2, ISO, FedRAMP, etc.) as they relate to engineering operations.
Experience Requirements
- 8–15+ years in engineering, technical program management, DevOps/Platform, or engineering operations roles.
- Experience leading teams and managing managers.
- Strong understanding of SDLC, modern software engineering practices, and agile frameworks.
- Demonstrated ability to build scalable processes in a growing engineering org.
- Familiarity with cloud-native architectures, CI/CD pipelines, incident response, and quality engineering practices.
- Strong analytical and operational problem-solving skills.
