Global Engineering Director

Reporting to the DVP, BU Manager, the Global Engineering Director drives the strategic development of engineering capabilities, oversees multi disciplinary engineering teams (software, electronics, mechanics, systems), and ensures strong alignment between engineering, R&D, Operations, Product Management, and Service. The Global Engineering Director leads all engineering activities across CAMECA worldwide, ensuring robust product development, engineering excellence, manufacturability, quality, reliability, and lifecycle sustainability of all product lines. The position safeguards the technical competitiveness, industrial robustness, and long term scalability of CAMECA's instrument platforms.

Responsibilities:

  • Engineering Strategy & Leadership
    • Define and deploy the global engineering strategy aligned with CAMECA's product roadmap, operational priorities, and AMETEK standards.
    • Build, structure and develop a high-performance global engineering organization, including team leaders in mechanical, electrical, software, systems, and sustaining engineering.
    • Ensure engineering governance, design standards, and process consistency across all sites.
  • Product Development & Industrialization
    • Oversee end-to-end engineering execution for all new product developments (NPI) and platform evolutions.
    • Guarantee strong collaboration with R&D teams to translate technological concepts into robust, manufacturable, and cost-effective designs.
    • Partner closely with Operations for DFM (Design for Manufacturing), sourcing strategies, tolerancing, reliability testing, and industrial ramp-up.
    • Ensure scalability and maintainability of design choices throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Sustaining Engineering & Lifecycle Management
    • Lead global sustaining engineering teams to handle quality issues, obsolescence management, reliability improvements, and product compliance updates.
    • Champion continuous improvement actions to enhance reliability, product performance, serviceability, and cost optimization (VA/VE).
    • Oversee multi-year engineering plans for platform modernization and technology consolidation.
  • Quality, Compliance & Engineering Processes
    • Ensure compliance with relevant regulations: safety, EMC, environmental norms, cybersecurity, export controls, CE/UL certification.
    • Maintain and improve engineering processes (documentation, test protocols, design reviews, change control, traceability).
    • Drive system engineering discipline: requirements flow-down, interface control, risk assessment (FMEA), verification & validation plans.
  • Project Management & Governance
    • Oversee engineering budgets, staffing, resource allocation, and multi-site workload planning.
    • Implement strong project management standards (Stage-Gate / NPI governance) consistent with AMETEK Corporate requirements.
    • Monitor key KPIs: schedule adherence, design quality, reliability metrics, cost targets, productivity, and obsolescence risk.

Requirements:

  • Education & experience:
    • PhD in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Systems, Physics, Mechatronics or related field).
    • 15+ years of experience in engineering leadership roles within complex high-tech equipment industries (semiconductors, metrology, scientific instrumentation, aerospace, optics, or similar).
    • Proven success managing multi-disciplinary engineering teams and large-scale product development programs.
    • Experience with global, multi-site organizations.
    • Strong background in industrialization, DFM, reliability engineering, systems engineering, and sustaining engineering.
  • Professional knowledge & abilities:
    • Technical Expertise
      • Strong background in complex mechatronic, electronic, software, and system-level architectures for high-precision instruments.
      • Solid command of systems engineering, DFM/DFA, reliability engineering, risk analysis (FMEA), and structured design processes.
      • Experience with industrialization, supplier management, and lifecycle/obsolescence management.
    • Leadership & Team Management
      • Proven ability to lead multi-disciplinary, multi-site engineering teams, drive accountability, and develop technical talent.
      • Skilled at managing technical trade-offs and aligning engineering teams around performance, cost, and schedule targets.
    • Project & Portfolio Management
      • Mastery of project governance (Stage-Gate/NPI), planning, budgeting, and resource allocation.
      • Ability to manage several complex programs simultaneously and steer engineering KPIs (quality, reliability, productivity).
    • Cross-Functional Collaboration
      • Strong partnership with R&D, Product Management, Operations, Quality, Supply Chain, and Service functions.
      • Ability to translate market and customer needs into clear engineering requirements.
    • Quality, Compliance & Standards
      • Knowledge of international regulatory standards (CE/UL, EMC, RoHS/REACH, cybersecurity, export controls).
      • Skill in driving structured testing, validation, and certification processes.
    • Strategic & Business Acumen
      • Capability to define long-term engineering strategy, platform roadmaps, and make-or-buy decisions.
      • Financial literacy for managing budgets, cost optimization, and value engineering initiatives.
    • Behavioral Skills
      • Excellent communicator, able to present complex topics clearly.
      • High resilience, adaptability, and problem-solving mindset.
