Director of Engineering

The Director of Engineering at ORTEC will lead the product development and engineering support of all new and existing nuclear instrumentation products and manufacturing processes used in scientific research, the nuclear industry, and health physics. In addition, this position at ORTEC is a combination of Technical Manager and Business Leader. As such, it requires highly developed technical and product design skills along with strong leadership and mentoring capability. He/she will be responsible for the growth of the technical and professional expertise of assigned personnel and increasing the overall capability of the organization. This position serves as a key member of the engineering leadership team reporting directly to the DVP of Engineering.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide technical direction and guidance, as well as hands-on project management, for all product development.
- Supervise a team of highly technical product design managers, engineers, scientists and documentation personnel.
- Develop and manage of the engineering budget.
- Ensure the optimal application of technology and engineering resources to meet product development, manufacturing support, and company business initiatives.
- Develop planning in coordination with the Product Line Managers and the ORTEC Business Manager for the control and coordination of product development activities.
- Provide sustaining engineering support and design documentation control for all products.
- Lead design improvements in support of manufacturing.
- Assist in the strategic planning for the assigned line of business.
- Take overall responsibility for project timing and successful product completion to pre-production.
- Collect, maintain, and report information on the progress of projects and forecasts.
- Support existing products with Engineering Documentation and day-to-day consultation with Operations, Marketing, Technical Services, etc.
- Coach, mentor and develop staff and conduct performance reviews and recommend salary adjustments for any assigned employees.
- Initiate, develop and monitor strategic goals as it relates to the product development process.
- Optimization, maintenance, and support of existing products to include reliability, cost, and product improvements
- Document and clearly communicate technical results within the company and to customers as appropriate. Represent ORTEC in a professional and positive manner.
- Responsible for timely, cost-effective project completion, and quality of results.

Candidates should demonstrate strong leadership skills and have the ability to structure and translate ideas into solutions. The ability to develop a staff with the appropriate mix of project, product and design skills, as well as the ability to give direction and promote teamwork is essential. Equally important is the ability to build effective relationships with customers, internal clients and colleagues. The successful candidate will have:
- Strong understanding of engineering development process and maintaining engineering accountability.
- Strong project management skills and engineering financial planning and expense control experience.
- Demonstrated ability to lead multiple engineering projects and technical leadership of engineering disciplines.
- An accomplished design engineer with commitment to design quality products.
- Proven Product Design and Development experience. Depth of knowledge and demonstrated skills in structural and mechanical machinery design. Ability to use engineering and collaborative tools to create engineering efficiency.
- Technical Leadership. Demonstrated experience in project planning and management and/or organizational leadership. Strong mentoring skills.
- Ability to clearly and effectively communicate at all levels of both customer and the ORTEC organizations. Must have excellent communication and listening skills.
- Professional and outgoing with a high degree of initiative and self-confidence. Must be able to organize, prioritize, and complete responsibilities in a timely manner without external motivation. Able to quickly achieve and maintain a high degree of trust and confidence within key OEM customer and ORTEC organizations.
- M.S. or PhD desired but not essential.
Position Requirements
The successful candidate will have:
- BS in at least one engineering discipline with appropriate experience required; MS in engineering management or system engineering is preferred.
- Demonstrated initiative, organizational skill, and professional work habits.
- 10+ years of engineering experience including product design and technical leadership.
- Proven leadership skills. Able to establish mutual goals, create clear plan, and maintain team energy, motivation and commitment.
- Strong written and verbal English communication skills.
