Role Title: Systems Safety Engineer
Role Description: We are looking for a highly skilled System Safety Engineer to spearhead the transformation of a critical naval Safety Case; an initiative central to the future of Australia's maritime capability. In this pivotal role, you will ensure full compliance with Navy Safety Engineering governance while driving alignment with world class standards and best practices. This is more than a project; it's an opportunity to influence national Defence readiness, shape safety frameworks for complex naval systems and leave a lasting impact on mission-critical operations.
Key Responsibilities: Reform the platform's Safety Case baseline to align with other in-service platform exemplars and Defence safety standards. Develop and implement processes for ongoing Safety Case maintenance and lifecycle management. Liaise with Navy Safe and other critical stakeholders to ensure compliance with Navy Safety Engineering governance and regulatory requirements. Prepare and deliver documentation and artefacts to achieve interim Safety Case approval from the regulator/endorser. Engage with Defence engineering teams, program managers and regulatory bodies to integrate effective safety processes. Produce high-quality technical reports, safety assessments and compliance evidence in line with Defence standards. Identify, assess and mitigate system safety risks, using recognised safety engineering methodologies. Establish periodic review schedules and contribute to continuous improvement of safety case management practices.
Essential Requirements: Tertiary qualifications in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Systems, or related discipline). Demonstrated Defence engineering experience, ideally within maritime or complex technical environments. System Safety certifications (e.g. MIL-STD-882, ISO 31000, or equivalent safety engineering frameworks). Proven ability to develop and maintain Safety Cases and navigate regulatory compliance processes. Strong stakeholder engagement skills and experience liaising with Defence regulators and governance bodies.
Desirable Requirements: Experience with NavySafE governance frameworks and Defence safety engineering processes. Familiarity with configuration management systems and Defence documentation standards. Excellent analytical, documentation, and communication skills.
