The Space Launch System (SLS) Booster Hardware Engineer will provide on-site Booster Element Office (BEO) representation for Booster hardware development and processing activities at the Kennedy Space Center.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide on-site BEO representation at Kennedy Space Center-Booster Fabrication Facility (BFF)/Rotational Processing and Surge Facility (RPSF)/ Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB).
  • Provide multi-discipline expertise associated with flight hardware, handling/access equipment, production/ground support equipment and tooling.
  • Provide expertise, guidance, and recommendations for the transition of mechanical design drawings/specifications into electronic shops instructions, training, and physical implementation of mechanical flight hardware assemblies and their associated support equipment, tooling, and facilities.
  • Work with and represent responsible hardware subsystem managers by providing on-site insight into planning, processes, issues, and resolutions.
  • Provide the SLS BEO with status of mechanical assembly and testing operations of the flight hardware and associated production support equipment.
  • Provide assessments of SLS Booster programmatic and technical products in support of applicable design and operations reviews.
  • Coordinate and communicate with other MSFC/KSC organizations.
  • Provide advice and maintain cognizance in the processing of Booster structures, assemblies, and integration hardware, including change package engineering and material review boards.

Degree in Engineering or related field is required. A degree from an ABET accredited institution preferred. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a BS degree with at least 15, MS with 13 or PhD with 9 years of relevant experience.

The following skills/experience are required:

  • Hands-on operational experience with a comprehensive knowledge of SLS and heritage Booster hardware design/production/assembly. Hands-on experience with Booster operational processes, procedures, and systems.
  • Extensive experience with SLS and heritage Booster assembly production planning, execution, monitoring, and controlling is required. Knowledge of SLS and heritage hardware production processing facilities, equipment, and tooling at the Rotation Processing and Surge Facility, VAB and prime contractor facilities.
  • Experience and detailed knowledge of Booster assembly operations, sequencing timelines, labor-loading, and the associated operations procedures.
  • Demonstrated effective communication skills dealing with a technically diverse group of personnel (technician/engineer/quality/management) with a broad range of experience.

The following skills/experience are highly desired:

  • Ability to effectively communicate significant programmatic/technical issues and potential resolution options to appropriate BEO personnel.
  • Working knowledge of the Booster element including an understanding of Booster unique production planning document development processes.
  • Previously demonstrated effective working relationship with Booster design/assembly personnel.
  • An understanding and knowledge of the current SLS program and a working understanding of the SLS vehicle and interfaces.

Essential Functions Work Environment: Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Travel may be necessary, but infrequent (<5%)

Physical Requirements: Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Requires sitting at a desk to write reports and perform engineering task activities (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and other facilities (10%).

Equipment and Machines: Requires ability to operate a personal computer and other general office equipment 50%.

Attendance: Normal workday is from 7:00 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday. Overtime during the week and weekends may be required to meet schedules (50% max). Attendance and being prompt is important to provide continuous service to the customer; adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences is required. Regular attendance and punctuality are mandatory for meetings and other planned occasions. (100%).

Other Essential Functions: The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others. Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.
