Mechanical Engineer- Design and Fabrication

This position will provide design and manufacturing support as well as systems and project engineering support to the Systems Analysis and Human Systems Integration Branch (EV73), the Mockup and Fabrication team, and the Human Systems Integration and Engineering (HSI&E) team in support of the Space Launch System (SLS) Program, the Human Lander System (HLS) Program, and Deep Space Habitation Systems Development. The successful candidate will coordinate and interface with multiple engineering disciplines, system elements, and customers, as well as participate in reviews, meetings, working groups, task teams, and systems/tasks supportability processes and assessments.

Specific support to be provided includes the following:

  • Assist in the design and construction of engineering mockup and prototype hardware using various materials.
  • Meet with customers and review the requirements for the mockup.
  • Determine the fidelity of the mockup based upon the customer's needs and requirements.
  • Convert design drawings (CAD files) into construction/fabrication drawings.
  • Procure the necessary materials and components for the mockup.
  • Facilitate the manufacturing and assembly of the mockup.
  • Routine status and communication activities.
  • Ensuring proper documentation practices.
  • Participate in systems/task supportability assessments.
  • Manage mockup and prototyping design and build tasks

Qualifications:

A BS degree or higher in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Civil Engineering or a degree in a related technical discipline such as Industrial Design, Physics, or Mathematics is required. Personnel must have a minimum of 5 years of experience, but the expected range is 10 - 15 years of relevant experience leading and/or performing design and manufacture support for aerospace prototype and mockup hardware.

A successful candidate is required to have:

  • Experience with planning/facilitating the design and fabrication of aerospace hardware models and mockups as well as prototype components/hardware.
  • Experience reading, interpreting, and understanding hardware engineering drawings.
  • Familiarity with CAD packages such as Creo or NX.
  • Knowledge of design and construction techniques and standards.
  • Experience with design for manufacturing techniques
  • Experience in woodworking and basic hand tool proficiency.
  • Ability to break problems or issues into manageable pieces to facilitate resolution of technical concerns.
  • Critical thinking, effective communication skills, and good problem solving skills.
  • Excellent technical writing and presentation skills
  • Intermediate skills using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).

Desired qualifications and experience (presence of one or more of these qualifications will be used as a selection factor):

  • Experience with CNC fabrication, milling, and machine shop operations.
  • Experience with 3D printing.
  • Experience managing engineering hardware fabrication projects.
  • A general knowledge of space vehicle design and interfaces, system design, and system engineering and integration.
  • Familiarity with NASA review cycles and/or Systems Engineering Handbook
  • Experience with human factors standards (NASA, FAA, or MIL).
  • Essential Functions

    Work Environment: Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (5%). Requires ability to work at a computer for long periods of time (100%).

    Physical Requirements: Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and our facilities (10%).

    Equipment and Machines: Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

    Attendance: Normal workday 7:30-4:30, Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity, and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

    Other Essential Functions: The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
