Family Support Specialist

General Function: Responsible for assisting with the overall operation of the Center's family support program. The person in this position has the responsibility for assisting with the planning and implementation of family support related activities. He/she will assist in providing support and educational opportunities provided by the Center's family support program.

Supervisory Responsibilities: None

Qualifications: Knowledge and Required Training: The person occupying this position must self-disclose that you are or have been a caregiver of a child or youth who is diagnosed with a mental health, emotional, behavioral or co-occurring disorder and who is receiving or has received mental health or co-occurring disorder services.

  • The person must have at least a High School Diploma or GED.
  • The person must have, or be willing to obtain first aid, CPR, and CPI.

The person must also be willing to obtain other trainings required to obtain/maintain Family Support Specialist Certification. The person must be able to demonstrate self-motivation, and excellent communication skills, and the ability to work well with others. The person must be a good listener, possess the ability to be supportive, and be able to help others to achieve a feeling of well-being.

Duties and Responsibilities: Can include any of the following:

  • To participate in the development and delivery of family support related activities as defined by the Center.
  • To participate in the maintenance of records, and all required reports as established by the Center, the State of Tennessee, TennCare Bureau, etc.
  • To obtain training in family support techniques/practices and to provide family support to youth and families of the Center.
  • To obtain other family support related trainings required for certification as a Family Support Specialist.
  • To assist youth and families with accessing necessary treatment and resources for resiliency and success in home, school and community.
  • To ensure that services, support, and advocacy are family-driven and youth guided; as well as provided in the least restrictive and most normative environment that is clinically appropriate.
  • To educate and empower the child, family, and caregiver on how to identify and utilize their strengths in achieving their goals.
  • To aid in service and discharge planning for youth and families served in the Center's programs. Provide follow-up after referral or discharge, to encourage the individual to keep appointments and to aid in continuity of care.
  • Participate in clinical staffing of individuals being served with Center staff from other disciplines.
  • Performs other duties as requested.
