The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is responsible for the safe, reliable, and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System. We are looking for an Engineer or Analyst to join the Data Management team within the Operations Systems department. You will play an integral part in supporting real-time operations of the Alberta Electrical Grid through management of the SCADA components of the Energy Management Systems (EMS) portfolio.

Operations Systems is a dynamic and highly collaborative team closely aligned with the real-time operation of Alberta's electrical grid and energy market. We monitor, maintain, troubleshoot, and integrate changes within the EMS system and supporting infrastructure, all with the aim of providing real-time situational awareness and decision support tools to system controllers.

Accountabilities include but are not limited to:

  • Support implementation of transmission and generation projects from SCADA functions:
    • Review technical documents, standards, and single-line diagrams to develop SCADA requirements for the AESO's power system model.
    • Work with Network team to set up communications links.
    • Work with internal and external personnel to implement, test, and validate data.
  • Manage baseline EMS functionality and contribute to 24x7 on-call support for real-time operations, including incident and problem management related to:
    • SCADA data configuration and quality.
    • SCADA Wide Area Network (WAN) and telecommunications links.
    • Support of protocols including DNP3 and ICCP.
  • Support and manage NERC CIP/Security compliance of the EMS.
  • Support key internal business users of EMS data and perform technical data analysis.
  • Provide project input, testing, validation, and support of key initiatives and growth of EMS applications.
  • Interface with IT team for incident/problem management, monitoring service level expectations and agreements, and joint project implementation and support.
  • Identify and implement process improvement and automation solutions, where applicable.

What you'll bring to us:

  • Undergraduate degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 5-8 years of experience in Power Systems Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Experience in EMS, including direct experience with GE EMS products is considered an asset.
  • Electric utility experience and/or familiarity with the operation of the AESO and the Alberta power market is considered an asset.
  • Experience supporting SCADA systems, including ICCP and DNP3 protocol, as well as a working knowledge of telecommunications and network infrastructure.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills utilized with co-workers and multiple levels of management.
  • Experience providing client service and resolving urgent issues. You are skilled at communicating and working with customers to ensure that their needs are being met.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills that integrate critical thinking and sound judgement in high-pressure real-time scenarios.
  • Self-motivated and goal-oriented with a desire to stay current on the latest job-relevant technologies.
  • Able to interact with both business users and technical specialists.
