Threat System Engineer

Job Summary: The STARE Lead Threat Systems Engineer identifies and assesses threat system characteristics, capabilities, and tactics that drive sensor requirements and operational performance within an integrated air and missile defense force. In this case, "threat" refers mainly to the systems the sensors must detect/track (e.g., tactical ballistic ballistic/aeroballistics missiles, cruise missiles, unmanned aerial systems, and tactical air-to-surface missiles to include anti-radiation missiles). Threat also includes aspects of the operational environment such as electronic attack and countermeasures. The STARE Threat Lead will routinely interface with STARE Functional Staff elements, STARE Leadership, and the various Product office threat leads/key engineers. This position also requires the STARE Lead Threat System Engineer to have/develop an understanding of the role, functions, and capabilities of STARE products within the operational architecture of the Army air and missile defense force. The STARE Threat Lead is the primary coordination point with external Threat SMEs within the other PEO Component Project Offices including but not limited to the Integrated Fires Threat System Engineering Group. The STARE Threat Lead external interfaces include Army Threat Support Agencies, threat and target model/simulation development teams, test agencies, and National Intelligence Agencies.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinating with STARE SE and Functional staff and Product Office threat leads to identify and define threat support requirements
  • Support Test planning including identification of relevant threat and test target characteristics and test scenario development
  • Communicate current and evolving threat status/operational capabilities as it relates to STARE product development strategies and requirements at STARE and Product levels, function as the threat SME
  • Assess and identify efficiencies for threat product development and actions across the STARE/PEO portfolio
  • Participate in working groups with Integrated Fires or other offices within the AMD Portfolio to develop and coordinate threat modeling and simulation (M&S) requirements; Represent STARE in Integrated Fires (IF) Systems Engineering Threat Group and other IF threat related meetings/working groups
  • Work with STARE SE/T&E to establish Threat/Target M&S need dates and ensure prioritization and integration in IF level threat M&S tools or data sets production/delivery schedules
  • Responsibilities include working/guiding verification, validation, and accreditation between STARE products and intelligence production centers/Army Threat agencies
  • The STARE Lead Threat Systems Engineer provides STARE level interface with designated Army Threat Support Agencies as well as the National Intelligence Centers and Warfighter community
  • Facilitate/advise Product offices development of critical intelligence parameters, VOLTs and Life-Cycle Mission Data Plans

Basic Qualifications:

  • Must have an active SECRET clearance with ability to obtain a TOP SECRET/SCI clearance
  • A Bachelor of Science in engineering, physics, or mathematics from an ABET accredited institution is required.
  • Experience in using/developing high fidelity threat models (e.g., kinematic performance, signature characteristics, and lethality modeling)
  • 5+ years' experience required; Must be a self-starter with the ability to work independently with minimal direction

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Air and Missile Defense Systems and/or related sensors
  • Experience in high fidelity threat/target model development or air defense high fidelity performance assessment process
  • Active or very recent TS/SCI access
  • Threat analysis experience in support of requirements development, test design or force-on-force operational assessment
