Carbon Capture Technology Research Position
This position is responsible for contributing to the development of a strategic vision and assist in the execution of research projects for next-generation carbon capture technologies. In particular, the role entails collecting, calculating, adjusting, and evaluating data, recognizing discrepancies in results, and following operations through a series of detailed steps or processes. Additionally, this role includes leadership responsibilities for the carbon capture team, ensuring project goals and deadlines are met and optimizing team performance through effective team management and guidance.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide day-to-day guidance to members of the carbon capture team.
- Delegate tasks and assignments to team members based on their skills and expertise, ensuring appropriate workload distribution.
- Work with on-field technology developers for the design, operation, and evaluation of systems pertaining to post-combustion carbon capture, including combustion aerosol characterization in sub-micron range using Electrical Low-Pressure Impactor (ELPI+TM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Modified EPA Method 5, and proton transfer reaction time of flight (PTR-TOF) instrumentation.
- Apply engineering concepts, theories, and practices to analyze data and resolve issues.
- Collect data accurately and evaluate to provide usable data as required.
- Generate technical analyses in support of pilot-scale research efforts to capture carbon dioxide from pre-combustion and post-combustion fossil derived flue gases.
- Collect and analyze chemicals of various solid, liquid, and gaseous samples.
- Develop and test hypotheses to describe unplanned, observed chemical phenomena with first-of-a-kind carbon capture systems.
- Work to solve problems where analysis of data requires thorough knowledge of the underlying scientific principles and experimental procedures.
- Conduct experimental procedures and collect, analyze, and interpret results for review by more experienced researchers or management.
- Develop research findings and draw conclusions.
- Advise and collaborate on changes in procedures and new approaches to deal with encountered problems.
- Evaluate results on research as directed.
- Prepare reports for clients as requested.
- Meet research goals within time and cost constraints.
- Contribute to the development of new theories and methods (deep dive capabilities).
- Proficient in lab view programming, PandID design (Visio, Autocad), electrical wiring diagrams, data acquisition specifications, interface and networking equipment.
- Maintain knowledge of engineering discipline through familiarity with current engineering literature.
- Understand and fully utilize the application of standard principles, theories, concepts, and techniques.
- Compile and analyze research results and arrive at preliminary interpretations.
- Evaluate experimental design and methods to recommend alternative and improved methods of achieving desired results.
Requirements/Minimum Qualifications
Bachelors degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering with four years of relevant experience or Masters degree in relevant discipline. PhD in chemical engineering or 5 years experience in field testing preferred. Computer literate and demonstrated ability to understand and use interfacing equipment. Must be proficient in Excel with the ability to develop complex spreadsheets. Experience with Statistical Analysis and Design of Experiments.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience within a large-scale industrial set-up is a plus, but not mandatory. Knowledge of process engineering and commercial scale-up is a plus. Experience with flue gas characterization, including Electrical Low-Pressure Impactor and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy Ability to recognize when current practice or procedure is inappropriate for requested analysis and the ability to modify such practices or procedures in a scientifically sound manner as to obtain defensible, reliable, accurate and precise data to meet immediate needs.
