Civil/Structural Engineer (Entry Level) – 0 - 5 years' experience
Work Location, Schedule, and Travel:
Positions will be located in Birmingham, Alabama. This position will require a mix of both office and field work. Hybrid work schedule (both in-office and telecommute); currently four (4) days in-office/in-the-field and one (1) day telecommute (subject to future adjustment). Relocation assistance may be provided if the successful candidate does not currently live within a reasonable commute distance. This position will require some travel (day and overnight, up to 25%) and the ability to work successfully in a remote/virtual environment, at times, with access to internet service.
This position is responsible for providing structural engineering design services for Southern Company Generation on capital and retrofit projects. Candidate will have the opportunity to perform structural design on small to large projects for the Southern Company fleet.
Provide Structural engineering services and field support. Conduct site walk downs of construction sites. Develop cost estimates and material takeoffs. Provide schedule and staffing input for projects. Produce and check structural steel and concrete design calculations and drawings. Produce inspection reports and recommendations. Multi-task and prioritize multiple project assignments to meet tight project commitment dates. Effectively communicate with Supervisor, project team and Plant contacts. Develop scope and man-hour estimate for assigned projects. Coordinate design activities with others. Some non-extended travel to construction sites and client locations is required.
Education: Bachelor of Science Degree (BS) in Civil or Structural Engineering from an ABET accredited program – Candidates with upcoming graduation dates will be considered. Completed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam or the willingness and ability to sit for and pass the FE exam.
Work Experience: 0 - 5 years of experience in structural design with a B.S. in Civil Engineering. Ability to perform or learn structural design using applicable design codes and standards.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Knowledge of structural steel and concrete design principles and industry methodologies. Good communication skills and ability to build and maintain strong relationships is a must. Strong problem solving and decision-making abilities. Working knowledge or familiarity of heavy industrial structures and components is a plus. Proficiency or familiarity with OSHA regulations. Able to coordinate small-scale, single or multi-discipline projects. High level of initiative and the ability to effectively plan, organize and execute multiple projects. Structural steel connection design experience or coursework. Proficiency or familiarity with structural codes and standards such as ACI 318, AISC 9th, 13th, 14th and/or 15th Edition, ASCE 7 and IBC. Experience using design software and computer programs such as STAAD PRO, Ansys, Navisworks, AutoCAD, SP Mats, etc.
