Service Technician

The Service Technician provides maintenance and component-level troubleshooting for parking payment equipment, including installation, upgrades, removals, parts management, and preventative maintenance. This role ensures that pay stations and meters operate reliably by responding to service tickets, performing repairs in the field, and delivering attentive customer service to maintain high levels of user satisfaction.

Responsibilities

  • Perform maintenance and component-level troubleshooting on parking payment equipment, including pay stations and meters, to ensure reliable operation.
  • Install new meters and pay stations and provide level-one maintenance and operational training during new meter installations.
  • Respond to assigned service calls on meters using a mobile app to identify the location and nature of each ticket, then diagnose and resolve issues efficiently.
  • Update technician support tickets with detailed troubleshooting steps, resolutions, and parts replaced to maintain accurate service records.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance on meters and pay stations as required to minimize downtime and extend equipment life.
  • Check all electrical and mechanical connections and verify power supply when servicing any meter or pay station.
  • Test all assigned meters daily for proper operation, including all payment methods and programmed rates.
  • Replace damaged decals and remove graffiti from meters and pay stations as needed to maintain a clean and professional appearance.
  • Perform daily inventory swaps by exchanging defective parts for working parts to keep field stock current and usable.
  • Ensure all service tickets are updated for billing purposes, including accurate service call time, travel time, and parts used.
  • Perform monthly truck inventory to maintain proper stock levels of tools, parts, and materials.
  • Schedule maintenance for the assigned company vehicle as needed to ensure safe and reliable operation.
  • Drive and navigate effectively, efficiently, and safely in a busy downtown urban environment.
  • Apply logical and scientific thinking to troubleshoot a wide range of technical problems, including interpreting nonverbal information such as diagrams, formulas, and technical schematics.
  • Prioritize tasks and manage multiple service calls, projects, and responsibilities simultaneously to meet daily performance expectations.
  • Communicate professionally with customers, city personnel, and internal team members to keep kiosks and stations running properly and to resolve issues promptly.

Essential Skills

  • Experience with electrical and mechanical repair, including troubleshooting and assembly of field equipment.
  • Ability to perform maintenance and general upkeep on parking pay stations and meters.
  • Proficiency using hand tools and power tools safely in a field service environment.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write clear reports, business correspondence, and procedural manuals documenting work performed.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups such as managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to apply logical or scientific thinking to complex technical problems.
  • Ability to interpret and work from blueprints, diagrams, and other technical documentation.
  • Ability to manage and update electronic service tickets accurately, including documenting troubleshooting steps, resolutions, and parts used.
  • Capability to drive and navigate safely and efficiently in an urban environment.
  • Strong task prioritization skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Comfort working independently in the field after an initial training period.
  • Ability to interact professionally with customers and city employees while performing service work.
  • Comfort working with nonverbal symbolism such as formulas, scientific equations, graphs, and other technical representations.
  • Strong attention to detail when testing payment functionality and rates on meters.
  • Organizational skills to maintain accurate inventory of truck stock and exchanged parts.
  • Reliability in following up on open service tickets daily to ensure timely resolution.

Work Environment

This is a field-based role working primarily outdoors in the San Francisco Bay Area. The schedule follows a weekday shift, typically Monday through Friday, with start times around 5:30–6:00 a.m. and end times around 2:00–2:30 p.m., with flexibility to work later days up to approximately 5:00 p.m. and up to 10 additional hours per pay period as needed. The technician completes an average of 4–6 service tickets per day. Work takes place outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat and rain, and requires comfort walking, standing, and working at meter and kiosk locations throughout the day. Each morning, the technician reports to the office to pick up a service truck, tools, and the assigned route for the day, then travels independently to service locations. The role involves regular use of hand tools, power tools, and a mobile app for managing service tickets, along with a company-provided vehicle for travel between sites.
