Now Hiring: Railcar Repairman/Welder
This role focuses on repairing and maintaining railcars through a combination of mechanical work and welding. You will spend approximately 60% of your time performing mechanical repairs and 40% performing welding tasks to ensure railcars operate safely and reliably. The position involves working in a heavy industrial environment, handling physically demanding tasks, and using a variety of tools and equipment to complete repairs to regulatory and customer standards.
Responsibilities:
- Perform railcar repairs and maintenance, completing approximately 60% mechanical tasks and 40% welding tasks to restore and maintain railcar integrity.
- Work safely around heavy equipment, railcars, and railroad tracks, consistently following all safety procedures and site rules.
- Interpret job work orders, blueprints, and schematics to determine required repairs and plan the appropriate sequence of work.
- Use mechanical skills and knowledge of machines and tools to weld, cut, gouge, and assemble components as needed for railcar repair.
- Coordinate and complete all assigned railcar repair tasks, ensuring work is finished accurately and on time.
- Notify appropriate personnel of any materials, parts, or equipment required to complete job tasks so that work is not delayed.
- Follow all safety rules, maintain a clean and organized work area, and comply with all Environmental, Health, and Safety policies.
- Ensure all work meets FRA, AAR, and customer quality standards, documenting and correcting any issues as needed.
- Perform grinding, torch cutting, fabrication, and mechanical assembly as part of the repair process.
- Use hand tools, air tools, and other shop equipment to disassemble, repair, and reassemble railcar components.
- Troubleshoot mechanical issues on railcars and identify the root cause of problems to determine appropriate repairs.
- Perform supportive tasks related to railcar repair that may be altered or redesigned based on operational needs.
- Complete any other duties as assigned to support the completion of railcar repair and maintenance activities.
Essential Skills:
- Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to perform a wide range of mechanical repairs on railcars or similar heavy equipment.
- Ability to weld, with experience in flux core welding preferred and the capability to perform or learn MIG welding.
- Strong knowledge and safe use of hand tools, air tools, and related equipment commonly used in mechanical and fabrication work.
- Experience with torch cutting, grinding, and fabrication in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
- Ability to read and interpret work orders, blueprints, and schematics to perform accurate repairs.
- Capability to stand for long periods and lift repetitively throughout the day while performing physically demanding tasks.
- Ability to work safely around heavy equipment, railcars, and railroad tracks, following all safety rules and procedures.
- Experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably involving mechanical work or railcar work.
- Ability to work effectively in a dirty, heavy industrial environment with varying temperatures.
Additional Skills & Qualifications:
- Flux core welding experience is preferred but not strictly required, as training can be provided based on weld test results.
- Previous experience with railcar repair or heavy industrial maintenance is highly desired.
- Mechanical assembly experience, including the use of air tools, hand tools, and grinding equipment.
- Fabrication experience, including cutting, fitting, and welding components for structural and mechanical repairs.
- Strong troubleshooting skills to diagnose mechanical issues and determine appropriate repair methods.
- Willingness to learn and build additional knowledge of machines, tools, and repair techniques over time.

Work Environment:
This role is based in a heavy industrial railcar repair facility that is very dirty and physically demanding. You will work in all weather-related conditions, with a very hot environment in the summer and a very cold environment in the winter. The job requires standing for long periods, lifting repetitively throughout the day, and working around heavy equipment, railcars, and railroad tracks. You will regularly use hand tools, air tools, welding equipment, grinding tools, and torch cutting equipment to perform repairs. Safety gear such as boots and safety glasses is required, and the overall environment is rugged, hands-on, and focused on safe, efficient railcar repair operations.
Job Type & Location:
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Hollidaysburg, PA.
Pay and Benefits:
The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $24.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
