Operating Engineer

The Operating Engineer supports two large pharmaceutical facilities in Cambridge by operating and maintaining low-pressure steam boilers, mechanical and HVAC systems, and performing general facility maintenance. This role follows a Monday–Friday schedule from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. with rotating on-call responsibilities. The position requires a hands-on professional who is comfortable balancing boiler operations with a wide range of maintenance tasks across the buildings.

Responsibilities

  • Operate, monitor, and maintain low-pressure steam boilers serving two large pharmaceutical buildings.
  • Perform routine and preventive maintenance on boilers, mechanical systems, and HVAC equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, boiler, and HVAC issues, diagnose root causes, and implement timely repairs.
  • Carry out general facility and building maintenance tasks, including plumbing and maintenance repair, as needed.
  • Conduct regular inspections of equipment and systems to identify potential problems and address them proactively.
  • Follow established maintenance schedules and document all work performed in a clear and accurate manner.
  • Collaborate with other team members to coordinate maintenance activities and minimize downtime.
  • Adhere to all safety procedures, regulations, and best practices while working with mechanical and boiler systems.
  • Support facility operations without entering laboratory spaces, focusing on building systems and infrastructure.
  • Participate in a rotating on-call schedule to respond to after-hours equipment or facility issues.

Essential Skills

  • 3–5 years of experience working with low-pressure steam boilers, mechanical equipment, HVAC systems, and general facility maintenance.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform boiler maintenance, troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance on building systems.
  • High level of mechanical aptitude, including experience with plumbing, facilities maintenance, and maintenance repair.
  • 2nd Fireman's License (required).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for diagnosing and resolving mechanical and system issues.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills for documenting work and coordinating with team members.
  • Proven ability to work as a team player while maintaining strong attention to detail.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • 3rd Engineer license is a plus.
  • EPA Universal certification is highly desirable.
  • Experience with facility maintenance in pharmaceutical or similarly regulated environments is beneficial.
  • Demonstrated creativity in finding practical solutions to maintenance and operational challenges.

Work Environment

The role is based on-site at two large pharmaceutical buildings in Cambridge, supporting facility and building systems rather than laboratory spaces. The schedule is Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with participation in a rotating on-call schedule for after-hours support. Work is hands-on and equipment-focused, typically in plant rooms, mechanical spaces, and general facility areas, with no requirement to enter labs. The setting is professional and safety-conscious, with a focus on reliable building operations and well-maintained infrastructure.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $42.00 - $45.00/hr.
