HVAC Service Technician

The HVAC Service Technician responds to scheduled service calls, typically handling four appointments per day, to diagnose and repair a wide range of heating and cooling equipment. This role involves troubleshooting issues on furnaces, rooftop units (RTUs), air handlers, air conditioning units, mini splits, some ductwork, and thermostats, while providing clear communication and excellent customer service throughout each visit.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to daily service calls, typically managing approximately four customer appointments per day.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose issues with furnaces, rooftop units (RTUs), air handlers, air conditioning units, mini splits, and thermostats.
  • Perform accurate and efficient repairs on HVAC systems, ensuring all work meets quality and safety standards.
  • Conduct basic work on duct systems as needed to support proper airflow and system performance.
  • Listen carefully to customer concerns, ask clarifying questions, and identify the root cause of system problems.
  • Present clear repair options and recommendations to customers, explaining findings and proposed solutions in an understandable way.
  • Provide professional, courteous, and timely customer service during every service visit.
  • Use appropriate tools and testing equipment to perform diagnostics, repairs, and verification of system operation.
  • Complete required service documentation accurately, including details of diagnostics, repairs performed, and parts used.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area at each job site and in the service vehicle.
  • Operate a company-provided service van responsibly, adhering to traffic laws and maintaining a clean driving record.
  • Identify opportunities for system upgrades or replacements when appropriate and communicate these options to customers.
  • Support refrigeration-related diagnostics and service tasks in line with EPA certification requirements.
  • Uphold professional appearance and behavior, representing the company positively in all customer interactions.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as an HVAC service technician in residential, commercial, or mixed environments; 10 or more years of experience is ideal.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot and diagnose HVAC issues on furnaces, rooftop units (RTUs), air handlers, air conditioning units, mini splits, and thermostats.
  • Strong hands-on experience performing HVAC service and repairs in the field.
  • EPA Universal or equivalent EPA certification to handle refrigerants.
  • Demonstrated customer service skills, including listening to customer concerns and communicating solutions clearly.
  • Ability to present appropriate repair options and then execute the chosen repair effectively.
  • Ownership of necessary HVAC tools to perform diagnostics and repairs.
  • Clean driving record and ability to safely operate a service vehicle.
  • Solid understanding of refrigeration principles and system operation.
  • Reliable troubleshooting skills, including systematic diagnosis and problem-solving in the field.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • NATE certification is highly beneficial and demonstrates advanced technical proficiency.
  • Experience servicing both residential and commercial HVAC systems.
  • Comfort working with a variety of HVAC equipment, including furnaces, air handlers, RTUs, AC units, mini splits, and related controls.
  • Ability to identify and recommend system upgrades or new equipment when appropriate.
  • Strong verbal communication skills for explaining technical issues to non-technical customers.
  • Professional, presentable demeanor with a focus on building customer trust and long-term relationships.

Work Environment

This role is field-based and focused on HVAC service work at customer locations. You primarily work from a company-provided service van, traveling between residential and commercial sites to perform diagnostics and repairs on furnaces, RTUs, air handlers, AC units, mini splits, some ductwork, and thermostats. The position involves working both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions, as well as in mechanical rooms, rooftops, and other equipment areas. You regularly use standard HVAC tools, diagnostic instruments, and refrigeration gauges. The schedule is structured around daily service calls, typically averaging four appointments per day, and requires maintaining a professional appearance and demeanor while interacting directly with customers.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Sterling Heights, MI.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $26.00 - $36.00/hr.
