Hiring for Material Handlers in Spartanburg, SC! $21.47hr

The Material Handler coordinates and moves raw materials, work-in-process, and finished goods within the fabrication area of a manufacturing plant. This role ensures that table welders and conversion welders have continuous access to required materials to minimize downtime and maximize welding labor utilization. The Material Handler also maintains an organized, accurate inventory storage area so materials are safely stored and easy for others to retrieve.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the movement of raw materials, work-in-process, and finished goods throughout the fabrication area to support production needs.
  • Ensure table welders and conversion welders have the correct materials available at all times to minimize welding downtime and maximize productivity.
  • Provide custom steel parts to fabrication welders as required or directed.
  • Work closely with supervisors and team leaders to anticipate material needs and proactively stage materials for upcoming jobs.
  • Maintain organization of incoming steel and work-in-process materials so they are safely stored and easy for operators to locate and retrieve.
  • Ensure all work-in-process items are properly identified and labeled at all times.
  • Maintain organization of incoming custom steel, ensuring immediate identification, safe storage, and efficient retrieval.
  • Ensure first-in, first-out (FIFO) rotation of stock stringers and other materials as required.
  • Perform regular cycle counts to verify inventory accuracy and support inventory control processes.
  • Conduct physical inventories of raw materials, work-in-process, and finished goods according to the established schedule.
  • Collaborate with inventory control staff when working in a team setting on inventory-related tasks.
  • Move materials for specialized operations, such as Armadex, when directed.
  • Assist with safely loading trucks in the fabrication area and help package finished goods as needed.
  • Provide material handling support to all areas of fabrication as required to meet production goals.
  • Operate forklifts, pallet jacks, and other material handling equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Follow established shipping and receiving procedures, including picking, packing, loading, and unloading materials.
  • Maintain good housekeeping standards, including 5S practices, to keep the work area clean, organized, and safe.
  • Identify issues that adversely affect inventory accuracy or material flow and communicate them promptly to the appropriate personnel.
  • Follow all safety guidelines and practices while working around machinery, overhead cranes, and other industrial equipment.

Essential Skills

  • Intermediate to advanced forklift operating skills, including sit-down and stand-up forklifts and reach trucks.
  • Intermediate to advanced overhead crane operator skills for safe movement of steel and other heavy materials.
  • 2–3 years of material handling and inventory control experience in a warehouse or manufacturing environment.
  • Proficiency in material handling tasks such as picking, packing, loading, unloading, and order picking.
  • Experience with shipping and receiving processes, including warehouse inventory and warehouse packing.
  • Ability to safely perform heavy lifting and use pallet jacks and other manual handling equipment.
  • Computer literacy, including the ability to use basic software and inventory systems.
  • Good communication skills to coordinate with supervisors, team leaders, and operators.
  • Ability to read CNC screens and production drawings to identify material requirements and verify accuracy.
  • Ability to assess the aesthetic quality levels of raw materials and finished goods.
  • High school diploma or GED.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Spartanburg, SC.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $21.47 - $21.47/hr.
