Senior Structural Engineer
AECOM is currently recruiting for a Senior Structural Engineer to join our UK & Ireland Building Engineering team. This technical practice comprises over 1000 engineering professionals across 28 office locations drawn from a variety of disciplines in the built environment. Within the structural engineering practice there are over 170 engineers across the UK. This opportunity has arisen in our South West & Wales (SW&W) business which has teams in our Basingstoke, Bristol and Plymouth offices and a focus on Defence, Aviation and Education.
We undertake a range of projects including those which feature seismic, impact, and other dynamic loads. The right candidate will need to demonstrate a desire to be challenged, an ability to analyse complex structural engineering problems and undertake the technical delivery of projects. In return we offer a challenging and rewarding role, career development, a positive working environment and a competitive reward package.
Our work regularly uses cutting edge software and advanced analytical approaches. This opportunity would suit an individual who has a wide range of experience in structural analysis techniques such as Finite Element, Soil Structure Interaction or non-linear dynamics and who is looking to obtain wider ranging experience. The right candidate will be experienced in the preparation of technical reports and other documentation within complex and demanding project delivery.
The role requires hands on development of analytical models that support engineering design. Whilst you will principally be associated with substantiating solutions for our client's problems, an ability to represent AECOM in a client facing environment will be desirable. You need to be comfortable with explaining the approaches adopted and results derived to a wide range of audiences. An ability to manage projects, resources and commercial aspects of projects is desirable.
Some of the recent projects we have completed include:
- HMNB Devonport: Supporting the development of infrastructure at HMNB Devonport, the team have been involved in the design of seismically qualified upgrade works to existing dry docks required to support deep maintenance of nuclear powered submarines.
- Heathrow T2 Baggage Programme: A £635M scheme to replace the time expired baggage system. The programme maintains the existing system until the new system is commissioned and enables the creation and adaptation of the structures to install the new 1800 bag/hour solution.
- Livingstone Academy, Bournemouth: Civil and structural engineering services for the design of a £30m academy school in Bournemouth. The project involves the refurbishment and conversion of existing Grade II listed buildings as well as construction of a new 5 storey teaching block.
We are increasingly supporting new and exciting projects across these markets, in the UK and globally. In particular relating to delivery of nuclear infrastructure in support of the AUKUS programme. A willingness to apply for appropriate security clearances to support such work is essential.
Location: Our offices in the SW&W are located in Basingstoke, Bristol and Plymouth and are home to other engineering disciplines. We are looking to grow the team with individuals with a sound technical background who share our enthusiasm and determination to support our expanding workload.
The SW&W team consists of 43 structural engineers and BIM specialists. Line management would be provided from Basingstoke or Plymouth. AECOM has an established flexible working policy, 'Freedom to Grow' which supports flexible and remote working that works for the business, client and individual.
We are looking to enhance and grow the team with individuals with a sound technical background and who share our enthusiasm and determination to support our expanding workload. This is a great opportunity to play a part in some exciting future construction projects.
Job Responsibilities: The successful candidate will:
- Take responsibility for leading or delivering analysis input on projects.
- Engage with clients & colleagues to define requirements, present proposals, discuss project progress and present project results.
- Effectively control commercial, managerial & technical aspects of projects or parts thereof for which you are responsible.
- Support the identification of opportunities & preparation of fee proposals, including resource & programme information.
- Undertake or lead a team of junior engineers & technicians in undertaking, technically challenging projects with minimal supervision within prescribed programme constraints.
- Co-ordinate project delivery with internal & external clients.
- Undertake structural engineering projects, by performing analyses & calculations as appropriate, along with preparing design reports with limited supervision.
- Supervise analytical work undertaken by others, ensuring it is carried out to the appropriate technical standard and is managed to programme & budget.
- Participate in interdisciplinary review of project deliverables.
- Perform quality control review of analytical models, design calculations or drawings.
- Mentor others in their professional development.
- Have a desire to learn new skills and the ability to consider the wider engineering issues related to the analyses being undertaken.
Minimum Requirements
- A strong background & experience in the use of a commercially available finite element software package (e.g. ANSYS, LUSAS, STAAD) including aspects involving either non-linear geometry, materials, or time and frequency domain methods. Experience using LUSAS preferred, but not essential.
- Experience of, or a willingness to learn, Soil Structure Interaction Analysis using a commercially available software package (e.g. PLAXIS).
- An understanding of a range of design codes, ideally including the use of seismic design codes such as ASCE 4, ASCE 43 and ACI 349 which are acceptable to be used in a nuclear environment.
- An appreciation of the importance of nuclear safety and the relationship between nuclear safety and design.
- Ability to communicate in the English language, both written and verbal, with an excellent ability to explain complex engineering principals in a manner which can be understood by a non-specialist
- Able to decide on the level of reliance and accuracy to attach to a variety of results obtained from analyses and to interpret results into practical engineering solutions
- Demonstrable track record in the delivery of projects or significant contribution towards project delivery
- Able to work on a range of projects simultaneously
Qualifications
- Masters degree or equivalent in an appropriate Civil or Structural Engineering discipline
- Bachelors degree (min. 2:1) in an appropriate Civil or Structural Engineering discipline
- Must be a Chartered Engineer with ICE or IStructE and with full membership of either
