Job Description

We are seeking enthusiastic and motivated Rail Civil Engineering Apprentice to join our Rail team.

As an apprentice, you'll gain hands-on experience working on a wide range of rail infrastructure projects – from concept and design to implementation – for clients operating locally, nationally, and internationally. You'll be part of a team that values collaboration, innovation, and technical excellence, working alongside experts who help shape the future of sustainable transportation.

Our Rail team plays a critical role in delivering safe, efficient, and resilient rail systems that keep cities and communities connected. You'll contribute to projects that improve urban mobility, modernise rail networks, and support high-speed and sustainable travel across the UK and beyond.

As an apprentice, you will:

  • Assist in preparing rail civil and structural design drawings using CAD (Computer-Aided Design) and 3D modelling tools
  • Support engineers in producing calculations, design proposals, and technical documentation
  • Help integrate engineering designs from other railway disciplines such as signalling, electrification, and track alignment
  • Participate in planning construction phases to minimise disruption to passengers and communities
  • Contribute to sustainability initiatives across the lifecycle of rail infrastructure
  • Participate in site visits to gather data, observe construction progress, or support inspections of existing structures
  • Assist with project administration and record-keeping
  • Work towards achieving Engineering Technician (EngTech) status, and later Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE)

Qualifications

This role is ideal for school leavers (GCSE or A-Level) who can demonstrate the following:

  • Minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade C/4 or above, including Mathematics and English
  • Three A-Levels (or equivalent such as BTEC Level 3 in Civil Engineering), including Maths and a physical science at grade C or above – required for Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship
  • An interest in railway engineering and transportation infrastructure
  • Some experience or shadowing in an engineering or construction environment (preferred)
  • Interest in software-based design and engineering tools (e.g. CAD, BIM, or 3D modelling)
  • Commitment to continuous learning and professional development
  • A creative, practical, and adaptable mindset with a passion for problem-solving
  • Strong attention to detail, organisation, and communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a team and show initiative when working independently

Additional Information

Applicants are encouraged to apply as early as possible since CVs will be reviewed, and candidates selected on a rolling recruitment basis for either immediate or advanced offer start.

Please include a covering letter with your application and provide all predicted and/or obtained academic grades and details of the dates you are able to work to/from and well as locations you would be interested in.

You must have the right to work in the UK.
