Graduate Chemical/Process Engineer Renewable Energy - Edinburgh or Glasgow

Our Energy Transition team within Renewables are seeking graduates to join within the Edinburgh or Glasgow office from August 2025 onwards.

Responsibilities include:

  • Supporting the delivery of consultancy services on renewable and energy transition engineering projects.
  • Providing input into feasibility level studies for renewable energy and energy transition projects in conjunction with the wider AECOM teams.
  • Collation and processing of project data from a wide variety of sources.
  • Preparation of technical reports.
  • Preparation of detailed design information
  • Assisting in securing work with renewable energy and energy transition developers and their supply chain

Typical Project Examples:

  • Green Fertilizer Production - AECOM has supported the Client to develop and procure the Front End Engineering Design of a world leading green fertilizer project using electrolytic hydrogen powered by an existing hydroelectric scheme. AECOM developed a concept design for the facility and undertook pre-qualification of the Front End Engineering Design contractors and technology providers, supported vendor selection and provided Owners Engineer oversight of the contractor deliverables to support the project through to its Final Investment Decision.
  • Low Carbon Fuelling Hubs – AECOM is actively supporting a joint venture to develop the UK's signature hydrogen hub in Aberdeen. AECOM supported the Client to join the Joint Venture and develop optioneering concepts tying in renewable generation to produce electrolytic hydrogen for mobility off takers for the municipal vehicle fleet. We are currently supporting the Client through project development and delivery.

When a graduate starts at AECOM, we pair them with a senior member of the team who will guide and mentor them through their initial period working on live projects and business development tasks, to support with any technical queries.

Graduate Development Programme

Our 2 year graduate ADVANCE programme is designed to help you build your career in AECOM. You will attend a number of instructor-led training sessions where you will meet and hear from people across the business and take part in a series of interactive activities to equip you with the knowledge and skills you need to succeed in your role. Alongside the instructor-led elements of the ADVANCE programme, you will also engage with an online curriculum via AECOM University and have the opportunity to join the ADVANCE webinar series. We will provide you with all the support and tools you need to achieve your professional development ambitions, which may include Chartership with the relevant international professional institution.

Minimum Requirements:

  • BEng Chemical, Mechanical or Process Engineering degree
  • MSc/MEng would be an advantage.
  • Able to demonstrate a commitment to continued education and improvement through participating in our approved training schemes.
  • Demonstrable interest in a career in renewable energy, energy transition and decarbonization
  • Good Microsoft Office skills essential such as Word, Excel & PowerPoint
  • Ability to communicate effectively to internal and external clients, both verbally & in writing with the confidence to engage with a variety of people (clients, colleagues, stakeholders and sub-contractors alike) and the aptitude to rationally explain, explore and discuss technical issues and capture feedback.
  • Enthusiastic, hard-working, with ambition and drive
  • Ability to structure & prioritise work effectively through close cooperation with the team as a whole.
  • Ability to work in a team and independently without losing initiative & focus.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters/Post graduate qualifications in a relevant discipline – e.g., Renewable Energy, Chemical, Mechanical or Process Engineering
  • Some familiarity with simulation software, CAD (Computer Aided Design) and ArcGIS would be beneficial.
  • Work experience in the renewable energy, energy transition or related field (e.g., working for either a power developer, equipment manufacturer, or consultant)
  • Driving licence – some travel to site may be required
  • Student member of an appropriate professional institution
  • Working ability in a second language and/or relevant work experience outside the UK
