Associate Director - Mechanical Engineer (Buildings)

Due to continued growth, we are looking for an experienced Associate Director (Mechanical) to help lead and grow the Building Services team in Sydney.

This role presents a unique opportunity to be recognised as a Director in our national Building Engineering team, delivering some iconic projects across ANZ and across a variety of market sectors, while still having a focus on growing and shaping the local team in Sydney.

How you'll make a difference:

  • Lead the delivery of complex, multi-disciplinary projects across sectors such as health, defence, transport, commercial, aviation, data-centre or other major building sectors around NSW/ACT.
  • Lead mechanical and multidiscipline building services design and end-to-end project delivery, including oversight of technical quality, coordination and design management across other disciplines such as electrical, fire protection and hydraulics.
  • Actively build and maintain strong client relationships to support business development and further secure a robust pipeline of future work.
  • Collaborate effectively within multi-disciplinary engineering teams, applying deep technical expertise to drive quality outcomes through rigorous review of design calculations, specifications, models and drawings, ensuring best-practice documentation and coordinated project outputs.
  • Provide leadership, coaching and mentoring to junior and intermediate engineers, contributing to their technical development and supporting high-quality design documentation and project delivery.
  • Leverage an established local network to strengthen AECOM's presence in NSW, with a clear expectation to grow and develop the Sydney building services team as part of the national Building Engineering team.

The qualities that help you thrive:

  • Ideally, 15+ years' experience in building services consultancy or contracting design with a strong mechanical engineering background. Furthermore, Chartered status (CPEng) essential, other registrations highly regarded.
  • Demonstrated leadership in technical design and multi-disciplinary project delivery.
  • Deep knowledge of building services systems, standards and best-practice design, with the ability to guide clients, mentor junior engineers and provide technical direction across complex project environments.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple concurrent projects, lead multidiscipline bids for building engineering projects, and collaborate effectively with senior leaders to support business development and operational performance.
  • Proven track record of enhancing long-term client relationships and working across key sectors such as data centres, commercial, aviation, defence or broader building markets.
  • Strong communicator and leader with a passion for growing teams, coaching emerging engineers and driving quality, innovation and continuous improvement within the building services team.
  • An understanding of the Sydney building engineering market and its dynamics.

Why you'll love working with us:

  • Be part of a nationally recognised, global engineering business.
  • Work on high-profile, technically challenging projects across key sectors across ANZ.
  • Join a collaborative culture and work with teams across ANZ.
  • Flexible work arrangements, including alternative start/finish times, part-time, job-sharing and hybrid work options.
  • Purchase up to 6 weeks additional annual leave per year.
  • Flex public holidays – swap Easter or other holidays for ones that suit you better.
  • Continuous learning and growth - lunch and learns, professional development courses, financial study assistance, 5 days paid study leave, global career opportunities.
