Systems Engineer – Electrical, Electronics and Vehicle Connectivity

This Systems Engineer role supports the development of new truck electrical and electronic systems for the North American market, with a focus on test vehicle build support, fault tracing, and vehicle connectivity. You will work closely with global development teams to diagnose and resolve issues on test vehicles, implement software and hardware updates, and contribute to the continuous improvement of truck electrical and electronic architectures. The position is based onsite at a technical center in Greensboro and involves periodic travel within the United States to support new truck builds at manufacturing plants.

Responsibilities

  • Support the build of test vehicles by performing fault tracing on electrical and electronic systems and implementing corrective actions directly on the vehicles.
  • Perform software updates on test vehicles, including downloading, configuring, and validating new software versions on vehicle controllers and related systems.
  • Carry out hardware updates on test vehicles, including installing, modifying, or replacing electrical and electronic components and wiring as required.
  • Conduct root cause analysis for functional problems identified in test vehicles, using structured diagnostic methods and tools to isolate and resolve issues.
  • Perform measurements at various points in the electrical system and log vehicle data needed for troubleshooting, using CAN tools and other diagnostic equipment.
  • Use commercial vehicle CAN communication protocols and CAN analysis tools, such as Vector CANalyzer, to capture, analyze, and interpret data for fault tracing.
  • Support problem resolution by collaborating with development engineers locally and globally to investigate specific issues and agree on technical solutions.
  • Recommend solutions for identified defects and provide clear, structured feedback to development teams on electrical and electronic system performance.
  • Issue problem reports for defects found in vehicle electrical and electronic systems, documenting symptoms, root cause findings, and proposed corrective actions.
  • Perform test activities required for road approval of test vehicles, including functional checks, documentation, and issuing vehicle check documents for road use.
  • Participate in design implementation by supporting training and knowledge transfer activities related to electrical and electronic systems and diagnostic processes.
  • Update and maintain databases used in fault tracing to ensure accurate, current information on known issues, diagnostic procedures, and implemented solutions.
  • Provide feedback on the test truck build process and propose improvements, particularly in root cause analysis and troubleshooting methods.
  • Verify and validate commercial vehicle systems and functions as part of system verification activities, ensuring compliance with design intent and requirements.
  • Work independently and remotely when required, managing tasks with minimal direction while maintaining high quality and accountability.
  • Collaborate effectively across functions and locations, contributing to a culture of customer focus, innovation, and continuous improvement.

Essential Skills

  • Specialist knowledge of commercial vehicle systems and functions, including truck electrical and electronic architectures.
  • Expert knowledge of commercial vehicle CAN communication protocols and experience using CAN analysis tools such as Vector CANalyzer.
  • Expert knowledge and experience with automotive electrical and electronics development and diagnostics tools.
  • Specialist knowledge and experience with vehicle controller software toolchains, such as Engineering Tool Prosit.
  • Experience with the latest generation sensor technology, including advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).
  • Experience with wiring harness manufacturing, troubleshooting, and repair tools.
  • Expert-level troubleshooting of commercial vehicle electrical and electronic systems.
  • Approximately 5 years of experience in commercial vehicle system verification and/or electrical and electronic system design.
  • Ability to perform structured root cause analysis and document findings clearly and accurately.
  • Strong hands-on abilities working directly on vehicles, including hardware modifications, measurements, and repairs.
  • Ability to work independently and remotely with minimal direction while managing multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Willingness and ability to travel within the United States up to approximately 20% of the time.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Master of Science in Electrical Engineering (MSEE) degree desired.
  • Experience with systems engineering in the context of commercial vehicles and complex electro-mechanical systems.
  • Experience in test vehicle support, including software updating, functional checks, and documentation for road approval.
  • Familiarity with ADAS sensors and integration into vehicle electrical and electronic systems.
  • Experience issuing structured problem reports and vehicle check documents for road approval processes.
  • International travel experience or willingness to travel internationally is preferred but not required.
  • Demonstrated customer focus and commitment to customer success.
  • Ability to ensure accountability, exercise sound decision quality, and plan and align work effectively.
  • Proven track record of driving results and applying a strategic mindset to technical challenges.
  • Strong collaboration skills, with the ability to build effective teams and instill trust across functions and locations.
  • Comfort managing ambiguity and taking action in dynamic development environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate innovation and contribute creative solutions to complex problems.
  • Self-awareness, effective communication, and the ability to drive engagement within cross-functional teams.
