Controls Engineer

Under limited supervision, you will plan, develop, and execute electrical engineering projects. Your role involves conducting electrical design, specification, implementation, testing, and evaluation of equipment control systems. You will provide electrical engineering design and support, manage the installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of production equipment, and offer subject matter expertise on electrical equipment and assigned projects. Additionally, you will schedule and facilitate electrical projects for on-site contractors and provide day-to-day leadership and training to maintenance employees, technical staff, and interns, if necessary.

Manage multiple engineering projects, ensuring deliverables meet quality, schedule, and cost objectives.

Provide program direction for computerized controls for semi-automated and fully automated manufacturing equipment.

Design, program, and troubleshoot PLCs, VFDs, and electronic control circuitry on production equipment.

Model in-house electrical schematics and P&ID drawings and process instrumentation engineering.

Maintain electrical and electronic systems control circuitry and instrumentation.

Interface with consultants and engineers on system design and integration.

Design, procure, and install facility electrical and production equipment.

Conduct root-cause analysis with other engineers across a functional organizational matrix to address recurring issues.

Train maintenance technicians on electronic control troubleshooting equipment techniques.

Contribute to department compliance on required documentation and serve as a resource for training maintenance and engineering employees.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Proficient in Rockwell PLC/HMI programming, AutoCAD Electrical, and machine safety design (NFPA 79/UL 508A/ISO).

Experience in commissioning on production lines.

Hands-on PLC programming and troubleshooting required.

Primary platform: Rockwell/Allen-Bradley ControlLogix & CompactLogix (Studio 5000/RSLogix 5000).

Experience with HMIs/SCADA: FactoryTalk View ME/SE, PanelView Plus; FactoryTalk Linx/RSLinks.

Knowledge of Drives/Motion: PowerFlex, Kinetix motion; basic servo tuning.

Understanding of Networks: EtherNet/IP (CIP & CIP Safety), Legacy DeviceNet, and Profinet/Siemens.

Familiarity with Standards: NFPA 79, NEC, UL 508A; ISO/IEC for machine safety.

Electrical design experience and CAD experience.

Knowledge of industrial machine/equipment electrical design.

Experience with Ignition or Siemens TIA Portal, vision systems, and data/historian integration is a plus.

EPLAN experience is advantageous.

PCB design is not required but is a nice-to-have skill.

Knowledge of production equipment such as roll-to-roll/web handling, coating/casting, and curing is helpful.

The role involves a typical time allocation of PLC/HMI/SCADA programming & commissioning (55–60%), electrical/controls design & documentation (30–35%), and vendor coordination, FAT/SAT, training, and sustaining support (10%). The work environment includes using technologies such as AutoCAD Electrical and requires familiarity with production equipment like unwind/rewind, tension control, web guiding/alignment, slitting/cutting, and ovens, UV-cure/glue systems, temperature/airflow control.

This is a Permanent position based out of Oceanside, California.

The pay range for this position is $120,000.00 - $135,000.00/yr.
