Mechanical Design Engineer
The Design Engineer will play a crucial role in driving engineering initiatives that focus on New Product Development (NPD) and the continuous improvement of existing products. This role will ensure that products not only meet but exceed customer expectations, national standards, and internal requirements for quality, cost, and manufacturability.
Responsibilities:
- Design mechanical components and systems for NPD initiatives related to product lines such as backflow preventers, pressure reducing valves, automatic control valves, and fire protection products.
- Participate in all stages of product development, including ideation, prototyping, design verification, and production validation.
- Generate innovative ideas by gaining real-world exposure to product installations through job site and customer visits, and incorporate these ideas into new product designs.
- Evaluate customer feedback, requirements, existing product designs, and performance standards to support new product development.
- Research, recommend, and execute product design enhancements or modifications to support cost reduction and quality improvements.
- Collaborate with engineers and lab technicians to develop and execute in-house validation tests and field test programs.
- Obtain third-party product listings and certifications for new products.
- Work with the drafting/design team to properly document all new designs within the document control system, including 2D drawings, 3D models, bills of materials, and technical literature.
- Maintain a safe and clean working environment by following procedures, rules, and regulations.
- Perform any other job duties as assigned, with a wide degree of creativity and latitude expected.
Essential Skills:
- BS degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical field.
- 7+ years of relevant experience.
- Strong skills in 2D drawing and 3D modeling, with AutoCAD Inventor experience being a plus.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Hands-on mechanical aptitude in a test lab environment.
- Working knowledge of mechanical and elastomeric components, such as fasteners, springs, o-rings, and seals.
- Understanding of fluid mechanics and hydraulic calculations.
- Proficiency in working on cross-functional teams to achieve product development goals.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and execute action plans.
Additional Skills & Qualifications:
- Experience with valves, fittings, foundry castings, metal machining, and plastic injection molding is desired.
- Familiarity with third-party certification agencies, such as Underwriters Laboratories, is desired.
- FEA and CFD experience is a plus.
- Experience with overseas sourcing and manufacturing is a plus.
- Some domestic or international travel may be required.
Work Environment:
The role involves working within a team of 13 people. After a certain period, a hybrid work option is available, allowing for one day a week to be worked from home. This is considered a privilege. Pay and Benefits:
