Mechanical Engineer I – Ventilation R&D

As a Mechanical Engineer I on the Ventilation Research & Development team, you will contribute to the design and development of next-generation mechanical and electro-mechanical systems used in critical care ventilation and life-support products. This role focuses on hands-on mechanical design, analysis, and testing, working closely with a multidisciplinary team to ensure products meet performance, reliability, manufacturability, and regulatory requirements.

You will support both new product development and enhancements to existing systems, contributing to life-saving technologies used in hospitals and emergency care settings worldwide. While the role is primarily technical, it may include limited project coordination responsibilities within larger development programs.

This organization is a global leader in the development of innovative medical technologies dedicated to improving outcomes for patients facing critical cardiopulmonary and respiratory challenges. Its portfolio includes advanced life-support, ventilation, monitoring, and therapeutic solutions used by clinicians, emergency responders, and healthcare professionals around the world. The company operates in a highly regulated environment and is deeply committed to engineering rigor, product quality, and patient safety, with a strong mission-driven culture focused on saving lives and improving care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop mechanical parts, assemblies, and enclosures for ventilation systems and related sub-systems.
  • Perform engineering analyses including mechanics, tolerance analysis, thermal analysis, and fluid mechanics / fluid dynamics to support system performance and reliability.
  • Support airflow management, pressure regulation, thermal control, ingress protection, EMI isolation, and shock/vibration mitigation to meet defined product requirements.
  • Refine designs to meet Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) objectives.
  • Create and maintain detailed engineering documentation, including: part and assembly drawings, Bills of Materials (BOMs), technical specifications and procurement documentation.
  • Generate and manage Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) in compliance with the Quality Management System.
  • Support preparation of documentation for design verification, validation, and regulatory submissions.
  • Contribute to risk assessments, hazard analyses, and FMEA activities in support of the Design History File.
  • Participate in technical design reviews and present concepts, designs, and trade studies to internal stakeholders.
  • Interface with suppliers to communicate design intent, review prototypes, and evaluate production samples.
  • Conduct part-level, subsystem-level, and system-level verification and validation testing and document results.
  • Plan and execute laboratory testing, including Design of Experiments (DOE), for both new and legacy products.
  • Provide technical input to project planning, including schedules, budgets, and progress reporting.

Essential Skills

  • Proficiency in SolidWorks, including part design, assemblies, drawings, PDM, and simulation tools.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, including fluid mechanics and fluid dynamics as applied to airflow, pressure control, and thermal management.
  • Working knowledge of engineering drawings per ASME Y14.5-2009 (GD&T).
  • Experience designing and packaging components for embedded or electro-mechanical systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly document and present technical information.
  • Self-directed, detail-oriented, and capable of working effectively with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and professional development.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering required.
  • 1–3 years of mechanical engineering and product design experience (minimum of 1 year with a Master's degree).
  • Experience in the medical device industry or other highly regulated environments is strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with IEC standards and regulatory design controls is a plus.
  • Exposure to lab testing, validation protocols, and quality systems is beneficial.

Work Environment

This role operates in a collaborative, cross-functional R&D environment alongside mechanical, electrical, software, and systems engineers, as well as scientists and quality professionals. The position involves a balance of desktop design work, hands-on prototyping, and laboratory testing.
