Mechanical Engineer

This role focuses on the hydraulic and pneumatic design of machines used for functional testing of products, laboratory testing, and specialty lean product assembly cells. You will design custom machines and fluid components such as valves, pumps, flow control, pressure control, heaters, and heat exchangers. 80% of your time will be spent on design work at your desk, with the remaining 20% on the floor collaborating with the assembly team. You will need to understand the fluid type - oil, water, or gas - and its consistency to design effectively without compromising machine integrity. You will work closely with a team of mechanical, electrical, and controls engineers, serving as the sole fluids engineer.

Responsibilities

  • Design hydraulic and pneumatic circuits for tooling and fixturing.
  • Calculate hydraulic and pneumatic test systems to ensure precise fluid flow, temperature, and pressure.
  • Perform hydraulic and pneumatic design in AutoCAD.
  • Collaborate with mechanical designers, controls engineers, and software engineers to ensure machine safety, reliability, and repeatability.
  • Develop Bills of Material and coordinate with purchasing for material and equipment procurement.
  • Assist machine builders with assembly and machine startup.
  • Communicate with Project Managers and customers as needed.
  • Support the Service team in troubleshooting customer machines in the field.

Essential Skills

  • 3-5 years of experience in designing and engineering hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Inventor.
  • Experience with fluid components such as valves, pumps, flow control, and pressure control.
  • Knowledge in designing heaters and heat exchangers.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with SolidWorks, mechatronics, PLC, and PC controls design.
  • Electrical design knowledge.

Work Environment

The company designs and builds custom test machines for automotive and industrial component manufacturers, with expertise in hydraulics, controls, electronics, fixture design, and assembly line integration. Work hours are Monday to Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM, with flexibility between 7 AM and 4 PM. All staff must be onsite from 9 AM to 3:30 PM. The company promotes work-life balance with a target of not exceeding 45 hours per week.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Howell, Michigan.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $36.06 - $55.28/hr.
