Sr Mechanical Engineer

The Sr Mechanical Engineer designs and develops innovative mechanical and electro-mechanical components and subsystems for industrial and commercial mobile cleaning robot platforms. This execution-focused role works within a cross-functional development team to deliver robust designs that meet performance, cost, and schedule requirements. The position combines hands-on mechanical engineering, new product development, and system-level thinking to bring advanced robotic solutions from concept through launch.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop mechanical and electro-mechanical product components and subsystems for industrial and commercial mobile cleaning robot platforms.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including electrical, software, manufacturing, and supply chain, to ensure designs meet performance, cost, and schedule targets.
  • Lead and execute new product development activities, from concept generation and feasibility studies through detailed design, prototyping, testing, and release to production.
  • Create and maintain detailed 3D CAD models and engineering drawings using SolidWorks or similar CAD tools.
  • Apply mechanical engineering principles to model, simulate, and predict system performance, ensuring that designs meet functional and reliability requirements.
  • Perform tolerance analysis and apply GD&T to ensure manufacturability, fit, and function of components and assemblies.
  • Develop and implement engineering standards, best practices, and design guidelines for mechanical and electro-mechanical systems.
  • Conduct design reviews and present technical information and recommendations to internal and external stakeholders in a clear and compelling manner.
  • Use data-driven methods, including statistical analysis and Six Sigma tools, to support design decisions and continuous improvement.
  • Prepare and interpret technical documentation, including specifications, test plans, reports, and other engineering deliverables.
  • Identify and mitigate risks through methods such as FMEA, ensuring robust and reliable product performance.
  • Manage ambiguous design tasks as a self-starter, driving issues to resolution with minimal supervision.
  • Support project management activities by providing accurate estimates, tracking progress, and helping to ensure projects stay on schedule and within budget.

Essential Skills

  • Proven experience in mechanical design engineering, with four to eight years of relevant industry experience.
  • Strong experience in the design and development of mechanical and computer-controlled electromechanical systems.
  • Hands-on experience with new product development, including taking products from concept through production; new product development experience strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency in CAD tools, with SolidWorks preferred, for creating 3D models and detailed engineering drawings.
  • Demonstrated ability in creative and innovative problem solving for complex mechanical and electromechanical challenges.
  • Self-starter mindset with the ability to manage ambiguous design tasks and drive them to completion.
  • Strong analytical skills, including the ability to model and predict system performance based on engineering principles.
  • Experience using data-based decision making and statistical analysis to support design choices.
  • Proficiency in GD&T and tolerance analysis to ensure precise and manufacturable designs.
  • Experience performing FMEA to identify and mitigate potential failure modes in designs.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to read, analyze, and interpret scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
  • Ability to effectively present technical information to a variety of internal and external groups.
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or equivalent degree from an ABET-accredited four-year college or university.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Master of Science in Engineering is preferred.
  • Project leadership experience is preferred, including coordinating technical activities and guiding cross-functional efforts.
  • Experience developing engineering standards and design guidelines for mechanical and electromechanical systems.
  • Familiarity with Six Sigma methodologies and tools.
  • Experience in industrial or commercial robotics, automation, or mobile platforms is beneficial.
  • Experience with sheet metal design and drafting is advantageous.
  • Exposure to project management practices, including planning, tracking, and reporting, is helpful.

Work Environment

This role operates in a professional engineering and product development environment focused on industrial and commercial mobile cleaning robot platforms. You will work closely with a cross-functional team that includes mechanical, electrical, software, and manufacturing engineers, using modern CAD tools such as SolidWorks and established engineering standards, including GD&T, tolerance analysis, FMEA, and Six Sigma practices. The position emphasizes collaborative problem solving, clear communication, and data-driven decision making while balancing performance, product cost, and project schedules.
