Manufacturing Engineer

The Manufacturing Engineer is responsible for enhancing the efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and robustness of machining and production processes on the shop floor. This position focuses on utilizing lean manufacturing principles to eliminate waste, reduce cycle times, and decrease overall production costs while maintaining high quality standards. The role involves close collaboration with machinists, quality, engineering, and leadership teams to analyze current processes, implement practical improvements, and help scale operations in response to increasing customer demand in a precision machining environment. This hands-on position is ideal for someone who enjoys being on the floor, driving change, and seeing measurable results.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and improve precision machining processes to reduce cycle time, scrap, rework, and overall cost while maintaining quality and delivery targets.
  • Lead lean manufacturing initiatives, including waste reduction, value stream mapping, 5S, standard work, and continuous improvement activities.
  • Develop and implement cost-cutting measures related to tooling, fixtures, workflows, setup reduction, material usage, and labor efficiency.
  • Develop and maintain process documentation, work instructions, routings, and manufacturing standards to support consistent execution.
  • Support new part introduction (NPI) by defining manufacturing processes, estimating cycle times, and ensuring manufacturability from launch through steady-state production.
  • Conduct time studies, capacity analysis, and layout optimization to improve throughput and resource utilization.
  • Collaborate with quality and engineering teams to address process-related nonconformances and implement corrective actions at the source.
  • Work directly with shop-floor personnel to trial, validate, and refine process improvements, ensuring solutions are practical and sustainable.
  • Track and communicate key manufacturing metrics related to efficiency, cost, and process performance.

Essential Skills

  • 3+ years of experience as a Manufacturing Engineer or Process Engineer in a precision machining or industrial manufacturing environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of lean manufacturing principles and hands-on experience applying them in a production setting.
  • Solid understanding of machining processes, including CNC milling, turning, setups, tooling, fixtures, and inspection flow.
  • Proven experience driving cost reduction and efficiency improvements through process changes and data-driven analysis.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and collaborate closely with design and quality teams.
  • Comfortable working directly on the shop floor and influencing change through collaboration rather than authority.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with value stream mapping, time studies, and layout optimization.
  • Familiarity with quality systems and structured problem-solving tools such as RCA, 8D, and PFMEA.
  • Post-secondary education in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience supporting a growing or transitioning manufacturing operation where processes are still being built and refined.

Work Environment

The position is based in a close-knit, hands-on work environment with approximately 50 employees at the Mississauga facility, fostering a strong sense of teamwork and visibility across the business. The operation is split between a dedicated engineering office area, where planning, engineering, and administrative teams work from cubicles, and a fully active machine shop floor where production is executed. This layout encourages regular interaction between engineering, planning, and manufacturing teams, allowing problems to be addressed quickly and decisions to be made with direct input from the shop. The environment suits individuals who enjoy being close to the work, collaborating across functions, and seeing their plans and decisions directly impact production outcomes.
