Harness Design Engineer

This role focuses on designing and integrating wiring harnesses for next-generation energy storage systems within complex electro-mechanical assemblies. The Harness Design Engineer will own 3D harness routing, develop detailed drawings and documentation, and collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to ensure robust mechanical integration across the full battery pack system. This position suits an experienced engineer who thrives in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment and is comfortable taking proactive ownership of design work from concept through release.

Responsibilities

  • Create 3D harness routing using CAD tools, with a strong emphasis on the SolidWorks Harness Routing Module.
  • Develop 2D harness layout drawings using appropriate harness design and drafting tools.
  • Design mounting strategies, routing paths, and interface points for harnesses throughout the energy storage system.
  • Create simple mechanical components such as brackets, clamps, strain-relief features, and other installation hardware that support harness routing and installation.
  • Generate and maintain detailed harness documentation, including connector and terminal specifications, harness drawings and schematics, bills of materials (BOM), installation drawings, and cable and harness construction details.
  • Create harness installation drawings that clearly communicate assembly and integration requirements to manufacturing and test teams.
  • Maintain and update component libraries associated with harness design tools, when applicable, to ensure accurate and current design data.
  • Collaborate closely with mechanical, electrical, test, and systems engineering teams to ensure harness designs integrate effectively across the full battery pack system.
  • Proactively participate in and drive design reviews, clearly presenting harness concepts, design decisions, and trade-offs to cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Identify and resolve interface challenges between harnesses and surrounding mechanical and electrical components.
  • Take full ownership of harness routing and mechanical integration tasks, delivering high-quality designs with minimal oversight.
  • Operate autonomously by identifying gaps, seeking alignment with relevant stakeholders, and pushing design progression without needing frequent direction.

Essential Skills

  • At least 6+ years of hands-on harness design experience in mechanical or electro-mechanical systems.
  • Strong proficiency in SolidWorks, with specific experience using the SolidWorks Harness Routing Module.
  • Deep understanding of mechanical integration principles, including packaging, routing constraints, and interface management within complex assemblies.
  • Proven experience designing brackets, routing supports, clamps, and other simple mechanical components that support harness installation.
  • Ability to generate and maintain detailed engineering documentation such as connector and terminal specifications, harness drawings and schematics, BOMs, and installation drawings.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present designs clearly to engineering stakeholders and cross-functional teams.
  • Autonomous and proactive working style, with a demonstrated ability to drive work forward independently in a fast-paced environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience creating 2D harness layout drawings using dedicated harness design tools.
  • Familiarity with maintaining and updating harness design or component libraries within CAD or PLM environments.
  • Background working on harness design within energy storage systems, battery packs, or similar complex electro-mechanical products.
  • Comfort working closely with multi-disciplinary engineering teams, including mechanical, electrical, test, and systems engineering.

Work Environment

This role is primarily onsite in a Bay Area engineering facility, with full-time onsite presence considered ideal to support close collaboration and rapid iteration. The team operates in a highly collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment that brings together mechanical, electrical, test, and systems engineers to develop advanced energy storage systems. Hybrid or remote arrangements may be considered for particularly strong candidates, with the expectation of periodic onsite visits to support design reviews, integration activities, and hands-on collaboration. The work involves extensive use of CAD tools, especially SolidWorks and its Harness Routing Module, along with standard engineering documentation and configuration systems. The culture emphasizes proactive ownership, open communication, and cross-functional problem-solving in a fast-paced setting.
