  • Assist with cable testing, including insulation resistance, tan delta, hipot, TDR, partial discharge, and cable thumper tests.
  • Assist with circuit breaker testing, including insulation resistance, contact resistance, power factor, breaker timing, SF6 gas analysis, CT testing, high current testing, secondary injection testing, and vacuum bottle integrity testing.
  • Participate in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical equipment in power plants, substations, and related facilities.

  • Apply knowledge of industry standards such as NETA, NFPA 70E, OSHA compliance standards, safety laws, and DOT regulations in daily work.
  • Participate actively in safety meetings and training, and follow all safety procedures and best practices.
  • Respond to customer emergencies in a timely manner as part of a rotating on-call schedule.
  • Work overtime, including nights, weekends, and some holidays, as required by project scope and customer needs.
  • Travel independently to project sites throughout the Midwest region and potentially across multiple states, staying on-site for multi-day assignments when needed.
  • Collaborate with team members and project stakeholders to deliver high-quality testing and maintenance services.
  • Perform other duties logically associated with the field service technician role as assigned.

Essential Skills

  • 2–5 years of hands-on experience performing high, medium, and low voltage testing of electrical power equipment.
  • Demonstrated voltage testing experience on electrical power systems.
  • Practical transformer and circuit breaker testing experience.
  • Ability to assist in diagnosing and resolving complex mechanical and electrical problems.
  • Familiarity with industry standards such as NETA, NFPA 70E, OSHA compliance standards, safety laws, and DOT regulations.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
  • Experience working with substation equipment and maintenance activities.
  • Willingness and ability to work overtime, including nights, weekends, and some holidays, based on project requirements.
  • Willingness and ability to travel for overnight, multi-day, out-of-town projects and work in a field environment.
  • Capability to rotate on emergency on-call duty and respond quickly to customer emergencies.
  • Residence within a reasonable commuting distance of the primary service area (approximately 60 miles of the designated hub in Illinois).

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • NETA-related experience in testing and maintenance of substation and power equipment.
  • NETA Level I, II, or III certification, or progress toward certification.
  • Bachelor's or Associate's degree in Electrical or Electronic Technology, or equivalent military experience in a related field (one of these backgrounds is required).
  • Experience with Doble DTAF and PowerDB software is preferred; training can be provided.
  • Experience working in industries such as mining, industrial electrical, data centers, primary metals, utilities, health care, and military or government facilities.

  • Effective communication skills for interacting with customers and internal teams.
  • Organizational skills to manage multiple projects, travel schedules, and testing documentation.
  • Interest in continuous learning and professional development in advanced electrical testing and commissioning.

Work Environment

This is a field-based role working primarily in power plants, substations, and other industrial electrical environments across the Midwest region, with projects extending from the West to the East Coast depending on customer needs. The technician typically works during corporate business hours of Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but must be prepared to work outside these hours, including nights, weekends, and some holidays, based on project scope and emergency call-outs. The position involves frequent travel, often solo, with overnight, multi-day stays at project sites; per diem is provided at federal rates to cover lodging and meals. A company credit card is provided for work-related expenses, and technicians may choose between a company truck with a fuel card or using a personal vehicle with a stipend and fuel coverage. The work involves hands-on testing and maintenance of high, medium, and low voltage equipment using specialized testing instruments and software in active industrial and utility facilities. The culture combines the stability and resources of a larger corporate group with the autonomy and feel of an employee-focused, growth-oriented company. The organization is rapidly expanding its service offerings, driven by recurring client work and significant data center projects, creating opportunities for career progression into technical leadership and client-facing roles.
