Field Service Technician

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Automation Controls & Instrumentation Technician who values quality, integrity, and independent work. In this field-based role, you will support, maintain, and troubleshoot automation control systems for customers, backed by an experienced engineering team. This position requires strong technical ability, professionalism, and effective communication with customers.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and emergency maintenance on customer control systems, including hardware/software troubleshooting and equipment repairs.
  • Provide outage, startup, and commissioning support.
  • Conduct control system tuning and instrument calibration.
  • Assist with installation and upgrades of control systems, including wiring, commissioning, and customer training.
  • Support spare parts inventory management.
  • Perform combustion/efficiency testing and tuning on fossil-fueled equipment.
  • Maintain accurate service records, logs, equipment files, and technical drawings.

Essential Skills

  • Strong hands-on experience troubleshooting and repairing instrumentation and control systems.
  • Ability to modify and maintain PLC, SCADA, and drive programs.
  • Proficiency reading P&IDs, IEC electrical drawings, and logic diagrams.
  • Solid problem-solving and decision making skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Highly organized, detail oriented, and able to manage projects independently.
  • Computer proficiency (e.g., Excel, Word).
  • Electrical and electronic aptitude and understanding of applicable codes and practices.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience operating, maintaining, or servicing process or boiler equipment.
  • Professional appearance, integrity, and a strong work ethic.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, be on call, and travel overnight as needed.
  • Valid Real ID driver's license or passport.
  • Experience in industrial service, technical education, or apprenticeship.
  • Working knowledge of electrical, instrumentation, and mechanical methods and safety standards.
  • Ability to read P&ID, wiring, and logic diagrams.
  • Ability to work independently at customer sites.
  • Understanding of control systems including PLCs, SCADA, networking, and industrial communication protocols (e.g., Modbus).

Work Environment

This role involves 50% travel, primarily within the region spanning Virginia to New York City, including Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, and New Jersey. There may be minor travel to the Midwest for one or two other customers. The technician will use a personal vehicle but will receive reimbursement for mileage, hotels, meals, and other expenses, supported by a company card. Air travel may also be arranged if necessary. The remaining 50% of work will involve engineering tasks, either working remotely or onsite.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Webster, NY.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $34.00 - $41.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
