Engineering Technician – Automotive

The Engineering Technician – Automotive will observe, monitor, and report the results of computer-controlled engine and vehicle tests to evaluate engine lubricants, fuel, and overall engine performance. The role involves following detailed written and verbal instructions, calibrating test equipment, maintaining accurate test records, and performing routine engine maintenance in a laboratory setting.

Responsibilities

  • Observe, monitor, and report results of engine and vehicle tests using computer-controlled test systems.
  • Measure and document engine lubricant, fuel, and engine performance data according to established procedures.
  • Follow detailed written and verbal test instructions and procedures with a high level of accuracy.
  • Calibrate test equipment at specified time intervals to ensure accurate measurement of engine performance.
  • Maintain log files and records for various test types in accordance with test procedures and laboratory standards.
  • Prepare, extract, and label specimens as described in test procedures and instructions.
  • Perform routine maintenance on engines used in testing to ensure safe and reliable operation.
  • Use and interpret engine manuals to support testing, troubleshooting, and routine maintenance activities.
  • Apply basic troubleshooting skills to identify and report issues with engines, test equipment, or test results.
  • Work effectively with automotive vehicles and parts while adhering to safety and quality guidelines.
  • Follow all laboratory safety practices, including the proper use of personal protective equipment.
  • Work assigned shifts, including overnight, day, or evening schedules, as needed to support testing operations.

Essential Skills

  • 1–2 years of experience working with automotive vehicles and/or automotive parts.
  • Knowledge of automotive engines, fluids, and parts.
  • Ability to follow detailed written and verbal instructions in a laboratory or technical environment.
  • Ability to calibrate and use test equipment to measure engine performance.
  • Ability to maintain accurate log files and test records in accordance with test procedures.
  • Basic math skills to perform measurements, calculations, and data recording.
  • Ability to use and interpret engine manuals for testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance.
  • Ability to perform routine maintenance on engines used in testing.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs as required for handling parts, equipment, and test components.
  • Proficiency with MS Office for documentation and basic data entry.
  • Willingness and ability to work any shift, including overnight, day, and evening schedules.
  • Fundamental troubleshooting skills related to automotive systems, tests, and repairs.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with automotive mechanics, automotive repair, and automotive service.
  • Familiarity with calibration processes in an automotive or laboratory environment.
  • Experience with engine testing or automotive test environments.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to following standardized test procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a technical team in a lab setting.

Work Environment

This role is based in a laboratory setting where the technician monitors engines and fluids as part of controlled test procedures. The work involves operating and observing computer-controlled engine and vehicle test systems, handling automotive parts, and working around running engines and associated test equipment. Ear protection and a lab coat are provided and used as part of standard safety practices. The position requires the ability to lift up to 50 lbs and to work in an environment where engines, lubricants, and fuels are routinely handled. The role follows a rotating or assigned shift schedule, and candidates must be willing to work any of the following shifts: 12:00 a.m.–8:30 a.m., 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m., or 4:00 p.m.–12:30 a.m.

This is a Contract position based out of San Antonio, TX.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $15.50 - $19.50/hr.
