Engineering Technician

The Engineering Technician interprets engineering prints and models, creates CNC programs, and sets up Swiss and milling machine centers to produce high‑precision components. This role develops capable and cost‑effective manufacturing processes, applies LEAN principles, and supports continuous improvement initiatives within a precision manufacturing environment. The Engineering Technician collaborates closely with cross‑functional teams to ensure high quality, on‑time production and robust documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret engineering prints and 3D models to develop CNC programs for Swiss and milling machine centers.
  • Set up CNC machines and verify that programs, tooling, and fixtures produce components to specification.
  • Select cutting tools that optimize tool life, cost, and performance while fully utilizing tool capabilities.
  • Develop machining processes that are capable, cost‑effective, and sustainable for production environments.
  • Write clear work instructions and procedures to support manufacturing processes and ensure repeatability.
  • Use a full understanding of G‑code to create, review, and optimize CNC programs.
  • Advocate for and implement high quality standards and LEAN manufacturing principles on the shop floor.
  • Assess, interpret, and communicate technical specifications and requirements to all relevant departments.
  • Identify, lead, and complete continuous improvement projects focused on cycle time reduction and perishable tooling selection and cost reduction.
  • Create, plan, and coordinate engineering tests to validate processes and tooling.
  • Perform quality assurance tests and inspections to ensure components meet all specifications and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist in or lead tool design activities and CNC programming for new and existing products.
  • Modify Bills of Material (BOM) and Bills of Operation (BOO) within the ERP system through formal change control processes.
  • Support costing and quoting activities related to tooling and manufacturing processes.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve daily manufacturing and machining issues using a structured LEAN problem‑solving approach.
  • Maintain and improve machining and secondary operational processes to ensure stable, efficient production.
  • Contribute to process validation, change control, and documentation to support a controlled manufacturing environment.

Essential Skills

  • 2–3 years of experience in a technical field, preferably related to CNC machining or manufacturing engineering.
  • Hands‑on experience with CNC process improvements, troubleshooting, validation, and change control.
  • Proficiency with CAD and CAM software, preferably SolidWorks, NX, and Esprit.
  • Experience with CNC programming for mills and related machining equipment.
  • Ability to interpret and work with engineering drawings, models, and technical specifications.
  • Strong understanding of G‑code and its application in CNC programming and optimization.
  • Proficient PC skills in a Windows environment, particularly with Word and Excel.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills to document processes and collaborate with cross‑functional teams.
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills, with the ability to work closely with engineering, production, and quality.
  • Experience supporting continuous improvement and continuous process improvement initiatives.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in the design and selection of fixturing and tooling for complex, precision components.
  • Work history working in a precision manufacturing shop environment, ideally in medical device or similar high‑precision industries.
  • Familiarity with fixture and tooling design concepts and engineering principles.
  • Experience applying LEAN manufacturing and LEAN Six Sigma methodologies, with formal training preferred.
  • Experience working within an ISO‑regulated environment.
  • Knowledge of machining equipment operation, maintenance considerations, and process capability.
  • Exposure to ERP systems and experience updating BOMs and BOOs through change control.
  • Comfort working on cost reduction initiatives, including tooling and cycle time optimization.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills for CNC equipment, processes, and machining quality issues.
