Automation Engineer – Biologics & Antibody Production

The Biotherapeutics and Genetic Medicine Department in Worcester, MA is seeking a highly motivated Automation Engineer to join our High Throughput Antibody Production team. This team plays a critical role in biologics drug discovery by delivering recombinant therapeutic proteins and developing innovative automated solutions to accelerate biologics workflows. This is a unique opportunity to make a direct impact on drug discovery through custom engineering and technology innovation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and produce custom labware and components to support automation in protein production.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot liquid handling systems (Hamilton, Lynx, Tecan) and robotic arms.
  • Develop and implement automation scripts using C#, Python, or Arduino for instrument control and data processing.
  • Integrate actuators and sensors into lab instruments using microcontrollers.
  • Collaborate across departments to identify automation opportunities and drive workflow improvements.
  • Contribute to biologics production and characterization through engineering support.
  • Present ideas and solutions to enhance throughput and efficiency in antibody production.
  • Manage multiple projects and communicate effectively with cross-functional teams.

Required Skills & Expertise:

  • Advanced proficiency in CAD design software (e.g., Onshape, SolidWorks).
  • Hands-on experience with 3D printing technologies (e.g., Bambu, Prusa, Formlabs).
  • Strong experience in mechanical or electrical engineering with lab automation experience.
  • Familiarity with biologics production processes is preferred.
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications:

  • BS or MS in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • 5–7+ years of relevant experience with a BS, or 3–5+ years with an MS in pharmaceutical or related industry.
  • Proven track record of developing and implementing automated lab solutions.

The pay range for this position is $60.00 - $70.00/hr.
