Automation Engineer – Night Shift

Commercial Aerospace | Permanent, Full-Time

One of our clients, a well-established company within the commercial aerospace industry, is seeking an Automation Engineer to join their team on a permanent, full-time basis. This role supports night shift operations and is ideal for engineers who enjoy hands-on manufacturing environments and advanced automation systems.

The Role

As an Automation Engineer, you will lead the project management, design, implementation, and support of new and retrofit automated and robotic tooling across the production floor. You will play a key role in maintaining automation systems, supporting certification requirements, and driving continuous improvement initiatives within a highly regulated aerospace environment.

This position is night shift-based, working closely with production and tooling teams to ensure automation systems perform reliably during off-shift operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Administer automation access control and manage support contracts with external vendors
  • Define cutter designs and cutter management processes for automated drilling tooling
  • Create, optimize, and automate laser shoot starting files and laser shooting processes
  • Support aircraft virtual joint processes and perform analyses for major structures
  • Set up, support, and improve inventory controls for automation equipment and spare parts
  • Provide technical support and project management for Key Characteristics and Critical Interface Points
  • Identify advanced manufacturing improvement opportunities and lead new technology and automation studies
  • Develop and deliver training related to automation systems, robotics, and laser metrology
  • Manage performance metrics, project budgets, and KPI tracking

Essential Skills & Experience

  • 3–5 years of experience as a Mechatronics Engineer or Controls Engineer
  • Manufacturing environment experience, particularly in machine design
  • Strong understanding of automation systems, laser metrology, and Siemens controls
  • Knowledge of engineering and metrology principles within automated manufacturing environments
  • Background in industries such as aerospace or automotive

Additional Qualifications (Nice to Have)

  • Experience with robotic assembly systems
  • Hands-on exposure to automated drilling processes
  • Automation experience specifically within aerospace or automotive manufacturing

Work Environment

You will spend a significant portion of your time on the shop floor, observing and supporting live production during the night shift. You'll work closely with the tooling team and be part of a small, collaborative group of engineers, encouraging hands-on problem-solving and knowledge sharing. Reporting to the Robotics & Automation Lead, you'll have both mentorship and the autonomy to implement innovative automation solutions.

This role is well-suited for engineers who thrive in fast-paced, real-world manufacturing settings and prefer working during night shift operations where their impact is directly visible.
