Senior Project Engineer in ABB Life Science

At ABB, we help industries run leaner and cleaner—and every person here makes that happen. You'll be empowered to lead, supported to grow, and proud of the impact we create together. Join us and help run what runs the world.

This position reports to: Pharma Engineering Manager

Your Role and Responsibilities

As a Senior Project Engineer in ABB Life Science, you will take a leading role in shaping and delivering complex pharmaceutical automation solutions. You will combine deep technical expertise with leadership responsibility, ensuring that automation designs meet process, GMP, quality, cybersecurity, and contractual requirements.

You bring solid experience within pharma production processes (e.g. fermentation, recovery, purification) and hands-on expertise with control systems such as DeltaV, Sattline, or ABB 800xA.

Acting as a technical lead, you will drive automation design from early concept through commissioning and final handover. You will make and approve key technical decisions, guide and coach engineering colleagues, and serve as a trusted technical partner for customers and project stakeholders.

This role is suited for experienced engineers who can balance hands-on technical work with leadership, risk management, and accountability for successful technical delivery.

Your Responsibilities Will Include

  • Act as technical lead for one or more project packets, with ownership of the overall automation design and technical solution.
  • Define, review, and approve automation design deliverables in accordance with GMP, quality, cybersecurity, and contractual requirements.
  • Make and justify key technical decisions and manage technical risks within the project scope.
  • Lead technical dialogue with customers and stakeholders and ensure alignment between process, automation, and compliance requirements.
  • Support proposal work and contribute to shaping technical solutions in early project phases.
  • Coach and guide engineers by reviewing work, sharing best practices, and ensuring consistent quality across deliverables.
  • Ensure technical completion and contribute to successful project closure and handover.

Qualifications for the Role

  • 5+ years of experience in automation or engineering roles within regulated industries, preferably pharmaceutical or life sciences.
  • Proven experience acting as technical lead with accountability for automation design, decisions, and deliverables.
  • Deep understanding of GMP environments, quality frameworks (e.g. GAMP5), engineering standards (e.g. S88), and cybersecurity requirements (e.g. NIS2).
  • Strong hands-on experience with pharmaceutical production processes and advanced DCS / SCADA systems; ABB 800xA experience is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to make and defend technical decisions, manage technical risk, and balance compliance, cost, and schedule.
  • Extensive experience working directly with customers and multidisciplinary project teams in complex project environments.
  • Ability and willingness to coach and guide engineers and contribute to competence development and best-practice sharing.
