The Impact You'll Make in this Role

As an Senior Product Engineer, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative people around the world. Here, you will make an impact by:

  • Utilizing knowledge of ceramic and material engineering to optimize products by leading strategic raw material substitution initiatives, supporting cost reduction efforts and other projects that may affect product performance, and advancing Product and Process Understanding (PPU)
  • Leading/supporting change management process and validating product performance for changes in formulation, process or raw materials
  • Ensuring consistent product performance and stability of existing products, by leading product improvement projects, as needed
  • Maintaining product standards and specifications, owning claims re-substantiation process
  • Driving scale-up activities as a core team member for new product introductions
  • Applying technical and leadership skills to generate project scopes, plans, and design of experiments.
  • Collaborating with cross functional teams (product development, application engineering, business, manufacturing and quality teams), global laboratories and manufacturing sites to execute on the projects in a timely manner
  • Utilizing strong communication skills to inspire, influence, motivate and teach other team members

Your Skills and Expertise

To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M is looking for candidates who must have the following qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree or higher in a science or engineering discipline (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited university.
  • Minimum two (2) years of combined experience in research & development in a private, public, government or military environment

Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:

  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Materials Science or Engineering, Inorganic Chemistry, or Ceramic Engineering.
  • Five (5) years of hands‑on experience in materials engineering, with a focus on inorganic or ceramic materials.
  • Strong background in materials science and characterization of inorganic or ceramic materials (hardness, toughness, microstructure and crystal structure) and their behavior in various product applications.
  • Ability to self-initiate, develop, direct, and complete projects with significant impact to 3M.
  • Proven record of effective teamwork.
  • Experience with creating and executing DOEs (design of experiments) and using data science and analytic techniques in experimentation.
  • Excellent communication skills (oral, written and presentation).
  • Microsoft Office proficient, Minitab or other statistical software is a plus.

Work location: This role follows an on-site working model, requiring the employee to work at least four days a week at the 3M Center in Maplewood, MN.

Travel: May include up to 30% domestic/international

Relocation Assistance: May be authorized
