At 1Password, privacy is more than a promise—it's a design principle. As we expand our global footprint and evolve our product offerings, we're hiring a Senior Manager, Privacy Engineering to lead the design, development, and delivery of privacy-preserving systems and practices across the company.
This role reports to the Senior Manager, GRC & Privacy and will be responsible for driving the technical privacy strategy across engineering and product teams. You'll partner with stakeholders across Security, Legal, Data, and Product to ensure privacy is embedded at every stage of the development lifecycle, and that our commitments to users and regulators are met with rigor, clarity, and care.
This is a unique opportunity to shape privacy engineering at a company where security is the product—and trust is the standard.
What We Are Looking For:
8+ years of experience in privacy engineering, security engineering, or a related technical field, including 2+ years in a leadership or management role.
Strong understanding of privacy-by-design principles, data protection engineering, and how to operationalize regulatory frameworks like GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, PIPEDA, and emerging global laws.
Experience implementing or leading efforts around data minimization, differential privacy, data subject rights, and secure data architecture.
Proven track record of working cross-functionally with product, legal, compliance, and security teams to align privacy needs with product delivery.
Familiarity with privacy-enhancing technologies (PETs) and modern engineering patterns for consent, data flows, and access controls.
Strong technical fluency—while this is not a hands-on coding role, you should be comfortable reading code, leading architecture discussions, and working alongside engineers.
Bonus points if you have:
Experience building or advising on AI/ML privacy practices, including model governance, training data management, or privacy risk mitigation in LLM pipelines.
Prior experience working in high-sensitivity or regulated industries, such as security, healthcare, or fintech.
Contributions to open source, policy working groups, or public thought leadership on privacy engineering.
What You Can Expect:
Lead the development of 1Password's privacy engineering strategy, ensuring our systems and services are designed with user trust and global compliance in mind.
Collaborate with legal and compliance partners to translate regulatory obligations into technical requirements.
Drive the implementation of privacy-by-default controls such as purpose limitation, role-based access, and data retention automation.
Work with engineering and product teams to embed privacy reviews, assessments, and controls into the SDLC.
Partner with Security and GRC teams to support data mapping, incident response, DSAR processes, and ongoing compliance efforts.
Represent the privacy engineering perspective in company-wide initiatives, including AI governance, customer trust, and platform infrastructure modernization.
Help establish metrics, dashboards, and internal education programs to raise privacy awareness and measure effectiveness of controls.
Mentor engineers and privacy champions across the organization to build a privacy-first culture into everyday development practices.
