Supervisor, Field Services

Under the supervision of the Assistant Director, Safety and Security, the Supervisor, Field Services is responsible for the day-to-day direction, supervision, and coordination of all assigned safety and security personnel and activities. This role ensures the effective deployment of security resources, supports the implementation of best practices, and provides oversight of both emergency responses and preventative safety programs. The Supervisor, Field Services also provides technical support for security-related technology and delivers training in support of the Office of Safety and Security. The role supports school safety across HCPSS buildings through collaboration, communication, and operational leadership.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Eight years of experience in school security in a PreK-12 or college/university setting, public safety work, or emergency management.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, homeland security, emergency management/public safety, education, public administration, or a related field.
  • Four years of experience in school security in a PreK-12 setting.
  • Two years of supervisory experience.
  • One year of experience designing and providing security training to school-based staff.

Essential Position Responsibilities

  • Supervises Safety and Security Assistants, assigns schedules and posts, monitors performance and conducts evaluations, utilizing progressive discipline as needed.
  • Participates in recruitment and hiring for Safety and Security Assistant vacancies and provides onboarding and field observations.
  • Facilitates meetings and ensures compliance with policies and culture.
  • Conducts security and crisis needs assessments in collaboration with school administration teams.
  • Supports development and implementation of safety plans, protocols, and strategies.
  • Monitors climate and recommends process improvements.
  • Responds to and manages emergencies, coordinates responses, investigates incidents, and ensures incident documentation.
  • Supports the planning and implementation of safety and security drills including the after-action evaluation.
  • Develops and delivers safety and emergency response training to a variety of stakeholders.
  • Supports safety and security professional development planning for all school system staff.
  • Performs school site visits, verifies operational status of equipment, and ensures compliance with visitor protocols.
  • Reviews and analyzes safety and security data and provides recommendations when appropriate.
  • Provides coverage and support during school system events.
  • Coordinates with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Models professional field leadership.
  • Resolves staff conflicts and workplace concerns.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of best practices in school security, emergency response, and visitor management.
  • Ability to supervise, evaluate, and support field-based personnel.
  • Effective communicator skilled in conflict resolution, training, and safety planning.
  • Ability to operate and troubleshoot radios, surveillance systems, and emergency protocols.
  • Proficiency utilizing digital productivity and collaboration tools including platforms such as Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Drive, Calendar) and Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word).
  • Capable of working in high-pressure situations and managing multiple priorities.

Additional Requirements

  • Possession of a Maryland Class C driver's license and satisfactory driving record. The selected candidate will be required to provide a copy of their driver's license and a review of the complete driving record will be conducted prior to hire.
  • This position is classified as "essential" and requires the ability to be on call and respond to calls 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Individuals in this position are issued an HCPSS mobile phone for these purposes. Accepting this position would require that you meet these requirements during your tenure with HCPSS.
  • This position will require occasional evening hours.
